Film production grad shows off his work

A SAIT alumnus and film society member recently took part in a film event called On Location.

Film and video production program graduate Kaz Nagao, now a member of the Calgary Society of Independent Filmmakers (CSIF), has been directing his own independent artistic films along with other members of the society. He has taken part in a film called “My Dinner with Andrea”, which was shown at the society’s On Location: Members Screening and Directors Talk Nov. 28 at the CommunityWise Centre.

“I initially got the membership just to get the cheap gear and all,” Nagao replied when asked about joining the society, “but then I realized how great their film stuff is.

“I decided to actually get involved and start doing more volunteer work, and actually join the committee of CSIF.”

Asked about the school’s film and video production program, Nagao said he hopes that “they’re sending off graduates that are actually doing something with that program.

“Some say that they should cut funding and all that. A couple of years ago they were saying that, ‘We want to combine the TV and film students together into one thing,’ and I told them that it wasn’t a good idea, because film, video and television aren’t really the same thing.”

He also talked about some of the realities of the film industry and his own experience.

“One of the toughest things in the industry is not about technicalities, nor is it about how much skill-set you have.

“The toughest thing is networking, and to this day I’m still, in a way, struggling to meet people. I think the most important thing is to keep networking, and make yourself noticed, but not in a pretentious way,” he said.

“One of the biggest things that would help you in this industry is to know the right people.

“This is a very close-knit industry when it comes to film-making, so don’t burn bridges and don’t be pretentious.”

Nagao began his studies at SAIT back in 2008 after doing several menial jobs after high school.

Film-making from a visual standpoint had always been something that interested him since he was young,

He also has an Internet Movie Database account, which lists all the films he has been involved with to date.
