Animated performances bring Frozen ballet to life

Absolute Dance’s 2015 Christmas performance was adapted from Frozen, Disney’s popular animated movie. In ballet form, the movie’s characters were replaced by 76 brightly-costumed dancers between the ages of four and 17. They took to the stage at Mount Royal University’s Wright Theatre on Nov. 29, putting on three back-to-back shows in front of nearly 800 people. More than 30 volunteers helped bring the show to the stage.

Absolute Dance was launched in 1998 and has been keeping their young performers busy ever since. The amateur dance company puts on three major productions, like Frozen, as well as recitals and other performances, for a total of more than a dozen shows each year.

I covered both a dress rehearsal and the performances on my way to gathering this gallery of pictures. Photographing the budding ballet dancers was a thrill I won’t soon forget.
