Setting the Barre for Fitness

With a new outlook on fitness, Hannah Martin wanted to create a studio that combined her love of dance, yoga and pilates.

After months of planning, Barre fitness was born.

Barre Body Studio is Calgary’s premier Barre Fitness Class that is a fusion of yoga, pilates and dance.

The workout is designed to help you sculpt, define, and shape your body with the help of a ballet barre.

“It’s the best of all worlds. Barre takes the focus and individual practice of yoga, melds it with the isolated movements of pilates, and wraps it all up in the choreography and grace of a dance class,” said Martin, the owner of Barre Body Studio.

A barre is a stationary handrail that is used during ballet warm up exercises.

The term also refers to the exercises that are performed at the barre, as well as that part of a ballet class that incorporates barre exercises.

Barre uses the ballet bar that trained ballet dancers use to help them with balance, discipline and technique.

However, with barre fitness no dance experience is required to take this class.

“Each hour-long class includes a full-body, high-energy, low-impact that will help you reach your fitness goals while leaving you feeling beautiful and graceful,” said Martin.

Martin started teaching her Barre Body fitness classes at the West Hillhurst Recreation Centre two years ago and started a small following of people who loved the workout.

“I had women coming up to me asking me if I could offer more classes and that’s when I thought, maybe it’s time for my own studio,” she said.

Barre Fitness Studio officially opened its doors to the public on Jan. 19th and now offers classes 7 days a week at various times to accommodate a variety of schedules.

Barre is suitable for people of all shapes, sizes and fitness levels, so people have no need to feel intimidated.

This total body conditioning technique has been intertwined to create an intense workout, guaranteed to transform and sculpt your entire body.

The classes are choreographed to the hottest music in a fun, supportive and high-energy environment.

“Each barre class incorporates elements of dance, free weights, and mat exercises. It’s harder than it looks but its low-impact and if you come regularly, it gets easier every time,” said Martin.
