{"id":37539,"date":"2017-09-25T08:00:32","date_gmt":"2017-09-25T14:00:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/saitjournalism.ca\/?p=37539"},"modified":"2021-02-11T20:42:53","modified_gmt":"2021-02-12T03:42:53","slug":"architectural-technologies-keeps-its-students-busy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/saitjournalism.ca\/thepress\/2017\/09\/25\/architectural-technologies-keeps-its-students-busy\/","title":{"rendered":"Architectural Technologies keeps its students busy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"wpsdc-drop-cap\">A<\/span>rchitectural Technologies is a demanding two-year program at SAIT that helps to launch its students into the workforce more quickly than other options.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"wpsdc-drop-cap\">W<\/span>ith a $42,000 median starting salary, and an 88 per cent employment rate, Architectural Technologies is a fast-tracked, full-time program with only two-week breaks for the students enrolled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUsually a couple hours a day can be allotted to free time if your time is used wisely,\u201d said Jake Braben, a 25-year-old Calgarian who is currently enrolled in his third semester.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFree time is definitely hard to come by with this program.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Braben said he usually takes up any of the free time he has by staying active and going to the gym, or socializing with friends.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI personally spend just as much time working at school as I do in the classroom.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSince the scale of our projects are very large, I find that I am less distracted and concentrate better if I continue working in a school environment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Although the program admission requires only a 50 per cent from high school math and sciences, it is a competitive acceptance process, and waiting lists are not uncommon.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAssignments are usually broken up into two categories: short term and long term.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShort term assignments are usually assigned in class and expected to be finished by the end of class.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLong term assignments are projects, usually assigned with four to five week due dates. Class time is often awarded but it\u2019s crucial to stay on top of these assignments on your own time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Braben said that a keen eye for detail, creativity, and hard work are all important skills to have in this program.<\/p>\n<p>A few of the specific details that Braben finds himself consistently working on include: drafting, design, building systems, building structures, building code and estimating.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are a few major computer programs that we use when working on these details.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAutoCAD software drafts our construction drawings, and Sketchup and Revit create 3D models of our projects,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Braben said that he grounds himself from a demanding program by finding balance inside and outside of school, and by properly managing his time.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_37572\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-37572\" style=\"width: 615px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-37572\" src=\"http:\/\/saitjournalism.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/20170919-S1-Architectural-Technologies-AW-051.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"615\" height=\"410\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-37572\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><strong>Heaps of Homework: <\/strong>Jake Braben. a second-year Architectural Technologies student poses with his most recent projects for an environmental portrait assignment in the Senator Burns building at SAIT Polytechnic Calgary on Tuesday, Sept. 19, 2017.
