{"id":37634,"date":"2017-10-23T12:01:21","date_gmt":"2017-10-23T18:01:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/saitjournalism.ca\/?p=37634"},"modified":"2017-10-23T12:01:21","modified_gmt":"2017-10-23T18:01:21","slug":"new-green-bins-collecting-opinions-as-well-as-compost","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/saitjournalism.ca\/thepress\/2017\/10\/23\/new-green-bins-collecting-opinions-as-well-as-compost\/","title":{"rendered":"New green bins collecting opinions, as well as compost"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><span class=\"wpsdc-drop-cap\">S<\/span>ince<\/span><span class=\"s1\">\u00a0green carts have recently been rolled out across Calgary, some residents have expressed mixed feelings over this new composting program.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Since 2012, the city has been collecting organic waste for the\u00a0pilot neighbourhoods of Brentwood, Cougar Ridge, Abbeydale and Southwood.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"s1\">The program seeks to reduce dependency on landfills while turning organic materials into a natural fertilizer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">According to CBC News, the amount of waste ending up in\u00a0the residents\u2019 black carts has been reduced by roughly half, with the introduction of the new bins.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cIt is an eye-opener to see how much food I throw out in a week,\u201d said Michael Pham, a resident of Dalhousie.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Although he likes the idea of composting food scraps, Pham said it takes time to get used to this habit.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">He said he would prefer to keep the costs down, considering there are expenses associated with the new garbage system.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cTen bags cost about $5, not to mention an extra fee for trash pickup.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">According to CBC, a fee of $6.50 per month is expecting to be charged to residents starting in January, 2018.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Linda Carate, a resident of Dalhousie, said that she is\u00a0trying to have the new cart removed since she has been composting on her own for years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cI have my composter, so I don\u2019t need the green bin,\u201d she said.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Carate said that the city should let home-owners opt out of the green bin program if they already compost.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cOtherwise, I would have to pay $70 per year for a bin to sit in my alley.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cI don\u2019t use mine anymore,\u201d said Janet Nguyen, a resident of Crescent Heights.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cThe indoor compost bucket smells unbearable, and it attracts fruit flies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cI tried everything to get the smell gone, but nothing worked,\u201d said Nguyen.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cI feel like the city has made a decision that costs a lot more than needed.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Nguyen said that they should have had better initiatives that could process all waste from a regular trash bag.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Coleen Franco, a resident of Brentwood, said that she is all in favour of this new system. Her only complaint is the inconvenience of storing those three bins, for compost, recycling and garbage.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cI use an ice cream bucket with a scented compost bag in it to hold my food scraps and put it under the sink,\u201d she said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cI just empty it out every day without having any bad smell.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Some people might not want to compost because of the stench, while others assume it&#8217;s just too much of a hassle, said Franco.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">&#8220;It can be very straightforward,&#8221; she said. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">&#8220;It doesn&#8217;t have to change your lifestyle at all, but it can make a huge effect on the environment.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Brenda Rainville, a resident of Cougar Ridge, said that the smell from compost can be controlled by putting all scraps in the freezer until pickup day.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">&#8220;I didn&#8217;t like that idea at first, but it helped prevent the odour.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">&#8220;I&#8217;m very pleased that my garbage has gone down significantly,\u201d said Rainville.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">&#8220;It&#8217;s important to remember why we are doing this.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">An <a href=\"http:\/\/calgaryherald.com\/storyline\/green-cart-compost-program-inches-closer-with-amended-bylaw\">online article by Calgary Sun<\/a> said that\u00a0the green cart program could keep more than 90,000 tonnes of food and yard waste out of the dump by 2025.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Additionally, with new bylaws, the city could institute fines if residents refuse to compost.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">However, Pham said that he feels a little skeptical about enforcing the practice, because some people might not see the actual environmental benefits of composting.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cThe biggest obstacle is to get the public to think differently about what it means to throw something away.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_37729\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-37729\" style=\"width: 615px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-37729\" src=\"http:\/\/saitjournalism.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/20170924-S1-Residents-Concerning-Over-The-Composting-Program-LH-0003.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"615\" height=\"556\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-37729\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><strong>Going Green: <\/strong>Michael Pham, a resident of Dalhousie, prepares food scraps and yard waste for collection in Calgary on Sunday, Sept. 24, 2017. &#8220;Although I like the idea of composting, it takes time to get used to this habit.&#8221;
