{"id":37854,"date":"2017-10-16T17:43:55","date_gmt":"2017-10-16T23:43:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/saitjournalism.ca\/?p=37854"},"modified":"2017-10-16T17:43:55","modified_gmt":"2017-10-16T23:43:55","slug":"bike-lanes-in-eau-claire-park-causing-concern","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/saitjournalism.ca\/thepress\/2017\/10\/16\/bike-lanes-in-eau-claire-park-causing-concern\/","title":{"rendered":"Bike lanes in Eau Claire Park causing concern"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"wpsdc-drop-cap\">W<\/span>hile the long-awaited redevelopment of West Eau Claire Park has Calgarians excited, some are concerned over some aspects of the plan, including the construction of a new bike lane.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"wpsdc-drop-cap\">I<\/span>n addition to updates such as more spaces for picnicking and recreation, the revitalization project will see a separate path for bikers running adjacent to existing pathway south of the Bow River.<\/p>\n<p>Project manager in charge of the parks redevelopment, Joyce Tang, says the new lane was made her teams\u2019 top priority after they listened to concerns from community members in area.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe hope in building an additional lane for cyclists is to give pedestrians room to move around freely while staying safe from oncoming cyclists,\u201d said Tang.<\/p>\n<p>While the new lane may be a priority for some, there are those who believe that all that is needed is simple common courtesy for fellow commuters.<\/p>\n<p>Stephanie Aster frequently rollerblades along the Bow River and says cyclists should stick to the existing bike lanes on the north side of the river.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s just a general sense of awareness and usership in the city that I think is really lacking,\u201d Aster said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re all out here trying to do our own individual sport, so respect that.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo we actually need to spend the money and time on a new bike lane? No, I think we need a lesson in ethics,\u201d said Aster.<\/p>\n<p>The project plans to open to the public for full access by summer of 2018.<\/p>\n<p>For commuters like Brandon Miles, who uses the path daily as part of his walk to work, that\u2019s not soon enough.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe river walkway is unusable and has caused complicated access to Prince Island Park when coming off of the Peace Bridge,\u201d said Miles.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd that makes me frustrated when trying to get to my job on time.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRather than redeveloping the path section by section, they have destroyed the whole network as one unit, altering park usage and the general atmosphere while construction takes place,\u201d Miles said.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_38192\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-38192\" style=\"width: 962px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-38192 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/saitjournalism.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/20170919-West-Eau-Claire-Park-Redevelopment-MD-0017-3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"962\" height=\"738\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-38192\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><strong>Pedestrians walking through construction: <\/strong>Calgarians walk through the construction site at West Eau Claire Park in Calgary on Tuesday, Sept. 19, 2017.
