{"id":38064,"date":"2017-10-14T12:12:46","date_gmt":"2017-10-14T18:12:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/saitjournalism.ca\/?p=38064"},"modified":"2021-02-11T23:10:08","modified_gmt":"2021-02-12T06:10:08","slug":"fast-and-furious-sort-of-on-the-streets-of-chestermere","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/saitjournalism.ca\/thepress\/2017\/10\/14\/fast-and-furious-sort-of-on-the-streets-of-chestermere\/","title":{"rendered":"Fast and furious (sort of) on the streets of Chestermere"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"wpsdc-drop-cap\">C<\/span>hestermere\u2019s third annual Lakeridge community Soap Box Derby tore up the streets on Sunday, Sept. 24, 2017, in Rainbow Falls link.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"wpsdc-drop-cap\">T<\/span>he race was held from 1-4 p.m. with 68 registered racers and streets filled with cheering fans.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think it\u2019s so fun for kids to build something and just come out on a great day and race, and have a good time, \u201csaid Pastor Evan Dewald of Lakeridge Community Church.<\/p>\n<p>Dewald started the event in 2015 to help bring people in the community together\u00a0and to get kids and parents to do something fun with each other.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI started this from my own love of building and I wanted to turn it into something that everybody could enjoy, especially the kids,\u201d said Dewald.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut us grown-ups have a pretty good time too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The annual build night was hosted on Sept. 13 in a garage on West Chestermere Drive, where kids and parents came together to build their very own soapbox derby cars.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBuilding the car isn\u2019t just about the car, but it\u2019s about creating space for people to spend time with their kids,\u201d Dewald said.<\/p>\n<p>The goal for build day is to encourage fun and healthy activities for kids to do with their parents as well as bond with other people in the community.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen somebody comes out and creates something as simple as a soapbox derby for kids, everybody gets really jazzed up about it,\u201d said Pastor Preston Pouteaux of Lakeridge Community Church.<\/p>\n<p>Pouteaux and Dewald think the best thing a handful of people can do for a community is to create these unique events that bring people together.<\/p>\n<p>Special guests, Chestermere RCMP and the Chestermere Fire Service, appeared at the race to help cheer the kids on.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy favourite part of the soapbox derby races is just to watch the kids laugh, and smile and run around,\u201d said Pouteaux.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe want them to feel like they\u2019re in a real race.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe think that this is the future of neighbourhoods and communities,\u201d said Pouteaux. \u201cWe want the parents to feel like they did a good thing by moving into the neighbourhood.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At the end, each kid was given a medal for their participation, and winners were rewarded with trophies.<\/p>\n<p>Caroline Dewald, 14, has participated in every annual soapbox derby race and received a second place trophy for her category this year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy favourite part about racing is winning,\u201d said Caroline Dewald.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut even if I didn\u2019t win this time, I still had fun, and I know I\u2019ll win next year.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For more information on events and next year&#8217;s soapbox derby race visit the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lakeridgecommunity.com.\">Lakeridge community website<\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_38114\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-38114\" style=\"width: 615px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-38114 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/saitjournalism.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/20170924-Photo-Assignment-1-KH-0745.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"615\" height=\"426\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-38114\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><strong>The Grand Finale: <\/strong>The participants of Chestermere&#8217;s third annual soapbox derby race got sprayed with silly string after receiving their medals on Sunday Sept. 24, 2017.
