{"id":38990,"date":"2017-10-20T08:00:10","date_gmt":"2017-10-20T14:00:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/saitjournalism.ca\/?p=38990"},"modified":"2021-02-11T23:11:42","modified_gmt":"2021-02-12T06:11:42","slug":"calgary-pro-boxers-show-off-their-skills-in-advance-of-big-bouts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/saitjournalism.ca\/thepress\/2017\/10\/20\/calgary-pro-boxers-show-off-their-skills-in-advance-of-big-bouts\/","title":{"rendered":"Calgary pro boxers show off their skills in advance of big bouts"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"wpsdc-drop-cap\">P<\/span>rofessional boxers Steve \u201cthe Dragon\u201d Claggett and Dwayne \u201cD-Bomb\u201d Lewis held a public workout at the Southpaw Boxing Gym in south Calgary on Oct. 12.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"wpsdc-drop-cap\">T<\/span>he two fighters promoted their upcoming fights at the end of the month as they showcased their skills for the in advance of the highly anticipated bouts.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m feeling sharp, I\u2019m feeling powerful, and I\u2019m having fun,\u201d said Claggett.<\/p>\n<p>Ranked as number two in Canada, in the super flyweight division, Claggett is looking to upset opponent Yves Ulysee Jr. in their upcoming title fight on Oct. 27. in Montreal.<\/p>\n<p>The current Canadian\u00a0 Pro Boxing Council (CPBC) champion was confident and excited for his opportunity to secure a vacant International Boxing Federation (IB super lightweight belt.<\/p>\n<p>He was also happy with the way his training camp was going, stating that it has been one of the best ones to date.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen you\u2019ve been in the game for so long you figure out what works and what doesn\u2019t work, so therefore, this is the best camp ever. I\u2019m just using all the things that work, every trick in the book,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Claggett\u2019s coach Vlad Goldenstein also noticed a dramatic change in the fighter\u2019s behaviour, saying that his positive attitude has been a real game changer moving forward in his career.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll the pieces are coming together, his attitude is much more positive and just having good people around and a good camp is important,\u201d said Goldenstein.<\/p>\n<p>Although Claggett has boxed all over the world, this has been the first time he has held a public workout in his hometown and to his surprise, even his mom was in attendance.<\/p>\n<p>The Calgary native was happy to be able to give his friends and family a glimpse of what life as a pro-boxer is like and his love for the city was not kept a secret.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m just proudly representing Calgary and I plan to take boxing to the next level for this city,\u201d said Claggett.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI really want to represent my city because I believe Calgary is world class, it\u2019s a hidden gem. I can\u2019t wait until I win a world title and people are \u2018like where\u2019s he from\u2019 and it\u2019s like, Calgary.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Also promoting his upcoming fight was Southpaws star heavyweight fighter Lewis, who will be facing his opponent Lee Mein at the Dekada premiere fight night, Oct. 14. at the Genesis Centre in Calgary.<\/p>\n<p>Lewis, who had originally begun his fighting career in mixed martial arts (MMA), recently made the switch to boxing and says that he\u2019s been loving it ever since.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s been a hard transition from MMA to boxing, but I\u2019m feeling really good,\u201d said Lewis.<\/p>\n<p>Known as a surprisingly fast fighting heavyweight, Lewis has worked hard to build up his boxing reputation.<\/p>\n<p>With a family at home and a full-time job as a general foreman for CN, training can be tough to squeeze in.
