{"id":39143,"date":"2017-10-20T08:00:19","date_gmt":"2017-10-20T14:00:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/saitjournalism.ca\/?p=39143"},"modified":"2017-11-15T10:42:36","modified_gmt":"2017-11-15T17:42:36","slug":"why-not-try-to-go-stress-free-this-semester","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/saitjournalism.ca\/thepress\/2017\/10\/20\/why-not-try-to-go-stress-free-this-semester\/","title":{"rendered":"Why not try to go stress-free this semester?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"wpsdc-drop-cap\">J<\/span>ulie Egers, SAIT psychologist, began her three-part series of \u2018Stress Less\u2019 workshops on Oct. 11, with the first installment called \u2018My Stress Less Plan.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"wpsdc-drop-cap\">T<\/span>his workshop helps students recognize and deal with the stress that comes with being a college student.<\/p>\n<p>Egers spoke to 11 students in the Stan Grad Centre about identifying stressors and how to take the right steps to manage stress, as well as the importance of being proactive versus being reactive.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe stress about stressing, and we panic about panicking. If you plan for stress to happen, it tends to be easier to manage,\u201d Egers said.<\/p>\n<p>In the first workshop of the series Egers spoke about the importance of self-care, developing manageable goals and the concept of \u2018good enough.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>Egers also talked about how comparing yourself to others can be toxic and unproductive.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe concept of \u2018good enough\u2019 is important because that lowers your stress enough to remind you of what you know. We are long distance runners not sprinters,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Egers also focuses on tips and exercises that students can try to relieve stress and relax, such as the \u2018senses\u2019 exercise.<\/p>\n<p>Students were told to describe five things they could see, four things they could feel, three things they could hear, two things they could smell and one thing they could taste.<\/p>\n<p>This helps cause awareness of surroundings and promotes relaxation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI found this technique useful and I will try it out during my exams next week,\u201d Ashlyn MacDonald, a Business Administration student at SAIT, said about the workshop.<\/p>\n<p>SAIT offers many resources for students who are feeling stressed or anxious about their studies.<\/p>\n<p>Eger works in the \u2018Student Development and Counselling\u2019 department at SAIT, which is on the second floor of Heritage Hall.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_39185\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-39185\" style=\"width: 3679px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-39185\" src=\"http:\/\/saitjournalism.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/20171017-Stress-Less-Workshop-AG-040-.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"3679\" height=\"3456\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-39185\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><strong>Stress Less Workshop at SAIT Tuesday, Oct. 17, 2017. Stress Less workshop series presented at SAIT in Calgary(Photo by Amanda Vi G\/The Press)<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cWe offer individual support to ensure success in students,\u201d Egers explained.<\/p>\n<p>Egers has worked at SAIT full-time for over five years.<\/p>\n<p>She studied at the University of New Brunswick, the University of Calgary and Mount Royal University.<\/p>\n<p>She also runs the \u201928 days of Happiness\u2019 campaign that helps students stay positive through the month of February, the worst month for seasonal affective disorder.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>We are long-distance runners not sprinters. -Julie Egers<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cFebruary tends to be a dark time for students so these daily positive emails are very uplifting for students,\u201d Egers said.<\/p>\n<p>Students are encouraged to attend the next two \u2018stress less\u2019 workshops even if they did not attend the first one. Free pizza will be available at the workshops.<\/p>\n<p>In the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sait.ca\/student-life\/health-wellness-and-safety\/student-development-and-counselling\/#event|stress-less-workshop-series-session-3-improving-your-sleep|3568\">next two workshops<\/a> Egers will be speaking about relaxation and improving your sleep.
