{"id":39358,"date":"2017-10-27T12:21:39","date_gmt":"2017-10-27T18:21:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/saitjournalism.ca\/?p=39358"},"modified":"2017-10-27T12:21:39","modified_gmt":"2017-10-27T18:21:39","slug":"sait-open-house-attracts-scores-of-potential-students","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/saitjournalism.ca\/thepress\/2017\/10\/27\/sait-open-house-attracts-scores-of-potential-students\/","title":{"rendered":"SAIT Open House attracts scores of potential students"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"wpsdc-drop-cap\">S<\/span>cores of prospective students, parents, and instructors filled the Stan Grad atrium on Oct. 27 for the 2017 SAIT open house.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"wpsdc-drop-cap\">\u201c<\/span>First of all, we are the best\u201d said Mo Keshavjee, who works for the School of Information and Communications Technologies (ICT) in a marketing and communications role.<\/p>\n<p>Keshavjee believes SAIT provides a great option for students looking to get real-world, hands-on experience in their fields.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe don\u2019t just teach you how to learn, we teach you how to do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to Keshavjee the mandate for SAIT is to provide \u201capplied learning,\u201d in the classroom rather than lectures.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur students are job-ready in two years,\u201d says Keshavjee. \u201cThey graduate on Friday, and go to work on Monday.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hands-on learning is part of what appeals to Jill Warrach, a 17-year old high school student visiting the open house from Strathmore High School.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think it\u2019s a good school. It teaches you a lot of skills in a short period of time,\u201d said Warrach.<\/p>\n<p>SAIT, and the ICT department in particular, works with industries to tailor programs to the evolving needs of the workplace, and technologies that students will encounter upon graduation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSAIT is on the cutting edge of technology, equipment and theories, by working with the industries,\u201d said Keshavjee.<\/p>\n<p>Sam Garthwaite, 22, was visiting SAIT from Thirsk, England and hopes to enrol in Journalism next year.<\/p>\n<p>The two-year turnaround is something that appeals to Garthwaite, who wishes to stay in Canada for the long-term.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was hoping to secure sponsorship with a company for a work permit,\u201d says Garthwaite.<\/p>\n<p>He sees education as a good alternative, and the two-year term of the program means he can start working sooner.<\/p>\n<p>Both Garthwaite and Warrach have applied to be in Journalism in 2018.<\/p>\n<p>Warrach hopes to work as a news reporter upon graduation. She enjoys observational writing and hopes to translate that love of writing into a future working for a newspaper.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI love writing. It\u2019s always been something I\u2019m passionate about\u201d says Warrach.<\/p>\n<p>New to the school of ICT this year is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sait.ca\/programs-and-courses\/full-time-studies\/diplomas\/information-systems-security\">Information Systems Security.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The program is in it\u2019s first year of existence and according to Keshavjee is the first and only two year program for IT security in western Canada.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_39360\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-39360\" style=\"width: 615px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-39360\" src=\"http:\/\/saitjournalism.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/20171027-SAIT-Open-House-JM-0002.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"615\" height=\"410\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-39360\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Mo Keshavjee speaks to prospective students on Friday, Oct. 27, 2017 in the atrium of the Stan Grad building in SAIT.
