R<\/span>ockin’ For Dollars is a Calgary event that happens every Wednesday at Broken City, a live music venue, and has been going on for two and a half years.<\/p>\n

T<\/span>he idea is all about the community. Bands of any genre can sign up, and play a 20-minute set to get exposure.<\/p>\n

Eric Andrews, the organizer for the event, said that over the two years they’ve seen a dramatic change in the number of people that show up.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn the beginning it was always just the same four bands that would come down and play.<\/p>\n

“As they started to invite more people, eventually it just kept getting bigger,” said Andrews.<\/p>\n

Andrews said that now, there are bands on a waiting list because there are only so many that can perform in one night, and the\u00a0dance floor can fill early on as fans gather for the first band.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s awesome that everyone can come here and feel like they are a part of something. All different kinds of people come out to have a good time,\u201d Andrews said.<\/p>\n

Since it started, Rockin\u2019 for Dollars has handed out more than $30,000 in prize money, to those band lucky enough to win the spinning wheel.<\/p>\n

Calgary is booming with talent, and events such as Rockin\u2019 for Dollars can help maintain a close knit group of creative people.<\/p>\n

Katey Munday, a frequent and dedicated attendee, said, \u201cIt\u2019s a fun interactive way to get to know people.<\/p>\n

“I would recommend it for only $3 to get in.\u201d<\/p>\n

For many, the most important part of the event is being able to meet people who love music and love having a good time because creates an atmosphere of acceptance and love, both inside and outside the venue.<\/p>\n

The diverse crowd makes for an amazing experience.<\/p>\n

Occasionally, audience members ask bands to play tributes to a specific well known band.<\/p>\n

For example, in September, Rockin\u2019 For Dollars asked bands to play one cover song dedicated to the Beastie Boys. The week after, the request was for a tune for The Ramones.<\/p>\n

Having some weeks themed has brought in a wider audience and more exposure.<\/p>\n

Broken City is located at 613 11 Ave. S.W. in the Beltline.<\/p>\n
