{"id":39655,"date":"2017-10-30T08:00:08","date_gmt":"2017-10-30T14:00:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/saitjournalism.ca\/?p=39655"},"modified":"2017-11-15T20:14:59","modified_gmt":"2017-11-16T03:14:59","slug":"how-buying-local-promotes-sustainability","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/saitjournalism.ca\/thepress\/2017\/10\/30\/how-buying-local-promotes-sustainability\/","title":{"rendered":"How buying local promotes sustainability"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"wpsdc-drop-cap\">F<\/span>ashionistas looking to shop local also have the opportunity to shop sustainably through purchasing second-hand, vintage and on-trend clothing.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"wpsdc-drop-cap\">C<\/span>algary store owner Myra Miller, along with her daughter Michelle currently run a clothing store called Velour Clothing Exchange.<\/p>\n<p>Formerly called The Front Porch during its time as a pop-up shop at Market Collective, a community-based marketplace, their store now located just above Tubby Dog on 17th Avenue S.W., specializes in carefully curated, second hand, 60\u2019s to 90\u2019s vintage and on-trend clothing for men and women.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe really support the local communities,\u201d says Myra Miller.<\/p>\n<p>Velour Clothing Exchange is a buy, sell, or trade store that purchases clothes directly from the public.<\/p>\n<p>Customers are able to buy clothes in the store, sell their used garments for cash or trade their items for in-store credit.<\/p>\n<p>With Velour a majority of its clothing comes from its customers through its sell and trade practice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe ratio of people bringing in clothes [than what we obtain from other sources] is 90 per cent,\u201d Myra Miller says.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat way you\u2019re keeping items out of the landfills, and recycling items as well,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a good way to do it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to an online study published by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nielsen.com\/ca\/en\/insights\/news\/2015\/green-generation-millennials-say-sustainability-is-a-shopping-priority.html\">Nielsen<\/a> in 2015 called the &#8220;Sustainability Imperative,&#8221; millennials are highly invested in businesses that follow sustainable practices.<\/p>\n<p>Among those surveyed who were willing to purchase an item at a premium, 53 per cent preferred to support a product from a business that was committed to its community.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI shop at Caf\u00e9 Beano, Tubby Dog, and a lot of local shop owners seem to support each other,\u201d says Myra Miller.<\/p>\n<p>She says that buying quality clothing that isn\u2019t going to fall apart is of importance to their business.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re going to get that with vintage because vintage things are made out of wool, silk, real fabric,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe clothes have been tailored, they\u2019ve been made in union shops so that people have been paid a fair wage.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Shopping locally is also about keeping capital in the local economy rather than the money going to the owners of a big corporation like Walmart.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s really the sustainable way of the future, or it is our future,\u201d says Myra Miller.<\/p>\n<p>She states that they want to be more sustainable, and ethical with what they carry in the store.<\/p>\n<p>Velour Clothing Exchange is reaching it\u2019s one year anniversary this coming November.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_39681\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-39681\" style=\"width: 615px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-39681\" src=\"http:\/\/saitjournalism.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/20171027-Shop-local-SP-0034.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"615\" height=\"984\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-39681\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><strong>Love Local: <\/strong>Myra Miller, co-owner of Velour Clothing Exchange poses in-store in Calgary on Friday, Oct. 27, 2017.
