{"id":39872,"date":"2017-11-27T11:29:23","date_gmt":"2017-11-27T18:29:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/saitjournalism.ca\/?p=39872"},"modified":"2021-02-07T19:05:01","modified_gmt":"2021-02-08T02:05:01","slug":"sait-east-hall-residence-plagued-by-multiple-false-fire-alarms","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/saitjournalism.ca\/thepress\/2017\/11\/27\/sait-east-hall-residence-plagued-by-multiple-false-fire-alarms\/","title":{"rendered":"SAIT East Hall residence plagued by multiple false fire alarms"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"wpsdc-drop-cap\">F<\/span>alse fire alarms occurred at least six times in October in SAIT&#8217;s East hall residence, forcing students to evacuate the entire building.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"wpsdc-drop-cap\">T<\/span>he fire alarms occurred so frequently that some residents started getting angry.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It is very unpleasant,&#8221; said East Hall resident Shaun Fisk, a Journalism student.<\/p>\n<p>Fisk said he was doing assignments when the alarms went off, and he had to drop everything and clear out.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Not to mention when it happens, there is a significant charge for it.&#8221;\u00a0 Fisk said, referring to the bill for emergency service that the person who caused the alarm can receive.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It takes time and money,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLast time, the fire alarm went off at midnight because some guys baked cookies and they opened their front door,\u201d said Esther Malo, a community assistant on the third floor of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sait.ca\/about-sait\/campus\/housing\/residence-life\">SAIT Residence<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe evacuated from the residence at 12 midnight, when the outside temperature was -5 C,\u201d said Malo.<\/p>\n<p>The false fire alarms appeared to be deterring students from taking them seriously.<\/p>\n<p>SAIT resident Susanne Chambers said the alarm went off three times in one day.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI&#8217;m tired of it already, said Chambers. \u00a0&#8220;I didn\u2019t even leave my room when the fire alarm went off.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Patrick Davies, a community assistant on the first floor, said the most recent situations were set off by steam from showers in students&#8217; rooms.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe system in East Hall is old and glitchy,\u201d Davies said.<\/p>\n<p>Glenice Grover, the general manager of SAIT residence, said the SAIT team was aware of what was happening, and has since moved to correct things.<\/p>\n<p>Grover said that it was because students were either burning food\u00a0or running a steamy shower.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf the steam is kept in the unit itself, it won\u2019t set off the alarm,&#8221; said Grover.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut when people open their front door from the unit to the hallway, it will trigger the smoke detector for the building and the alarm goes off.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Grover said that one solution has been to put some signs on every door\u00a0to remind students that if their smoke detector goes off not to open the front door, but instead open the window, or put a\u00a0towel around the smoke detector.<\/p>\n<p>Warning signs went up in late November, on the inside of each residence unit door. The signs misspelled the word immediately.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are also in contact with our electrical contractor to find out if there is something that we can do so it isn\u2019t happening so frequently,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>According to Grover, SAIT Residence wants students to take it seriously when the fire alarm goes off.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know it happens frequently so people are less likely to leave,&#8221; said Grover.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;That is a concern from our perspective for when there actually would be a fire.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>SAIT Residence has planned a meeting with community assistants in East Hall to explain to residents what the problem is.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_39882\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-39882\" style=\"width: 615px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-39882\" src=\"http:\/\/saitjournalism.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/20171030-S3-SAIT-residents-dealing-with-multiple-fire-alarms-in-a-month-MD-0003.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"615\" height=\"879\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-39882\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><strong> General Manager of SAIT: <\/strong>Glenice Grover, a residence manager, is working on the solution for multiple fire\u00a0evacuations in a month, in Calgary on Monday, Oct. 30, 2017.
