A<\/span>fter Sears Canada\u2019s<\/a> motion in October to liquidate its remaining 130 stores, some Calgarians have noticed prices have increased during the liquidation sales.<\/p>\n

L<\/span>isa Whyte, a loyal customer at Sears, said she was disappointed when she shopped at Sears after the liquidation was announced, looking for bargains.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m definitely upset about the price hikes,\u201d said Whyte.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t really think it\u2019s fair, I mean, why are prices increasing if the store is closing?”<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m just surprised that they\u2019re doing this,\u201d said Whyte.<\/p>\n

Whyte said she first noticed the price increases when she got home and took a closer look at the tag on one of her newly purchased shirts.<\/p>\n

\u201cI bought the shirt for $29.99, but when I peeled back the sticker, $16.99 was listed underneath,\u201d said Whyte.<\/p>\n

\u201cTo me, it looks like that was the price before the so-called liquidation sales began.\u201d<\/p>\n

Whyte said she became even more upset when she found out many other Calgarians had experienced the same thing.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019d understand if only a few items had increased prices, but for so many people to complain about this means that it isn\u2019t just a few special items,\u201d said Whyte.<\/p>\n

Doreen Phillips, another long-time shopper at Sears, said she also noticed increased pricing on items in the store.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m pissed off about it,\u201d said Phillips.<\/p>\n

\u201cSears is advertising closing sales but isn\u2019t delivering at all.<\/p>\n

\u201cI expected to find some good deals and instead I found some items that actually doubled the original price, no less,\u201d said Phillips.<\/p>\n

Phillips said she noticed it all throughout the store as she was shopping.<\/p>\n

\u201cHonestly, you\u2019d think they would be a little more sneaky about it,\u201d said Phillips.<\/p>\n

\u201cCovering the original price with a sticker that\u2019s easy to peel off is probably not the best way to go about raising prices, especially if they were trying to get away with no one noticing.\u201d<\/p>\n

Not everyone was surprised about prices rising during the store\u2019s liquidation sales, however.<\/p>\n

Helene Hunt, a duty manager at Sears in the North Hill Shopping Centre, said it isn\u2019t uncommon for prices to rise during liquidation sales.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve gone bankrupt,\u201d said Hunt.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo the goal of a liquidation sale is to get as close to 100 per cent as possible, considering creditors will not get a large sum of their money back.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe only thing we have to be conscious of is avoiding false advertising,\u201d said Hunt.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf we\u2019re advertising 50-per-cent discounts, at least some of the items in the store need to be 50-per-cent off.\u201d<\/p>\n

Although Hunt has received over 10 customer complaints since the liquidation sales began, she said she will continue to help customers find the best deals at the store before Sears closes for good.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
