{"id":40995,"date":"2017-12-09T15:19:59","date_gmt":"2017-12-09T22:19:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/saitjournalism.ca\/?p=40995"},"modified":"2021-02-07T20:14:24","modified_gmt":"2021-02-08T03:14:24","slug":"childrens-cultural-exhibition-brings-northeast-communities-together","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/saitjournalism.ca\/thepress\/2017\/12\/09\/childrens-cultural-exhibition-brings-northeast-communities-together\/","title":{"rendered":"Children&#8217;s Cultural Exhibition brings northeast communities together"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"wpsdc-drop-cap\">F<\/span>or the first time, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bcaoc.ca\/\">Calgary\u2019s Bangladesh Society<\/a> brought culture to the city in a Children\u2019s Cultural Exhibition at the Genesis Centre in northeast Calgary on Nov. 25.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"wpsdc-drop-cap\">J<\/span>arin Ahmed, the creator of the event, said she got the idea for the show came from working with the young people in her art classes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve had the desire to make an event like this for a very long time and I\u2019m very happy to have it all come together,\u201d Ahmed said in an interview prior to the event.<\/p>\n<p>Ahmed and her friends, Rita Rana and Suby Mehra, were able to rent out the venue to kick start their culture show.<\/p>\n<p>The exhibition was created to introduce the work of children of all cultures, and to educate parents and families to those different traditions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe asked all guests to wear their traditional attire and be open-minded towards the children that will be showcasing their cultures,\u201d said Mehra, who helped rent the venue where the exhibition was held.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s to open everyone\u2019s eyes and bring together people to enjoy a night of celebration, education and art of all kinds,\u201d said Mehra.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>It\u2019s to open everyone\u2019s eyes and bring together people to enjoy a night of celebration, education and art of all kinds. &#8211; Suby Mehra<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Mehra said the performances ranged from cultural dances, to singing and live paintings.<\/p>\n<p>Admission was only $10 and traditional Bengali food was provided.<\/p>\n<p>A children&#8217;s choir sang the song, &#8216;We Shall Overcome,&#8217; by Pete Seeger, to recognize the struggles of the people of Syria and other conflict zones.<\/p>\n<p>Rana insisted the song be sung in many languages including, Bangla, Urdu, Hindi, French and Spanish.<\/p>\n<p>Students of Ahmed\u2019s private art class created most of the exhibition with the help of their parents and teachers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cArt is shared among everyone, no matter where they are from.
