{"id":41195,"date":"2017-12-10T10:54:34","date_gmt":"2017-12-10T17:54:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/saitjournalism.ca\/?p=41195"},"modified":"2021-02-07T20:15:01","modified_gmt":"2021-02-08T03:15:01","slug":"once-in-a-library-not-far-away-star-wars-delighted-fans-young-and-old","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/saitjournalism.ca\/thepress\/2017\/12\/10\/once-in-a-library-not-far-away-star-wars-delighted-fans-young-and-old\/","title":{"rendered":"Once, in a library not far away, Star Wars delighted fans young and old"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"wpsdc-drop-cap\">W<\/span>ith the release of the flim &#8216;Star Wars: The Last Jedi,&#8217; only days away, the Calgary Public Library decided to capitalize the excitement with <a href=\"https:\/\/calgarylibrary.ca\/news\/star-wars-day-the-library-strikes-back\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a new Star Wars based event<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"wpsdc-drop-cap\">T<\/span>he event was held on Dec. 2<sup>nd<\/sup> at three locations across the city, Saddletowne, Central, and Shawnessy.<\/p>\n<p>The event was created to showcase the vast, fictional universe that comes with Star Wars: Films, TV shows, comics and of course books.<\/p>\n<p>The event was free to the public, allowing, young, old or brand-new fans to feel like they were a part of the Star Wars franchise.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI love Star Wars because there are always good guys like Luke Skywalker to stop the bad guys,\u201d said Aiden Gibbony, 9, who came to the event with his mom.<\/p>\n<p>There was an assortment of activities for guests to participate in, including a build your own lightsabre section.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI enjoyed building my own lightsabre because it\u2019s what the light sides guys do in the movies,\u201d said Ciaran Wilson, 7, who was eager to take part in more activities.<\/p>\n<p>These included creating a Star Wars snowflake, colouring an Ewok ornament and building a Porg out of paper.<\/p>\n<p>Throughout the day there were scheduled visits to each library from a life-sized R2-D2 and a Stormtrooper from the &#8216;501<sup>st<\/sup> Legion&#8217; for photo ops.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_41198\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-41198\" style=\"width: 615px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-41198\" src=\"http:\/\/saitjournalism.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/20171202-S5-Star-Wars-Day-At-The-Calgary-Library-TR-0006-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"615\" height=\"840\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-41198\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><strong>For the Empire:\u00a0<\/strong>A Calgary Public Library volunteer dressed as a First Order Stormtrooper during the Library Strikes Back event in Calgary on Saturday, Dec. 2, 2017. Rothermal\/SAIT)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The 501<sup>st<\/sup> Legion is a section of the Star Wars fan base that is dedicated to creating and wearing screen accurate replicas of Stormtrooper armour and various other costumes from the series at events such as this.<\/p>\n<p>Jarvis Calkins is a lifelong Star Wars fan and was grateful to be able to share his experience of the franchise with his kids Shay, 9, and Dominick, 11.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are all pretty excited. We\u2019ve started re-watching all the films in prep for The Last Jedi,\u201d Calkins said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAn event like this is a nice way to keep the excitement going but also giving us a break from sitting on the couch.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Calkins and his kids were eager to explore the library and see all of the various activities available.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI hope there is a BB-8 or a Darth Vader around. They are my favourite characters,\u201d said Calkins, 11.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI really want to see Rey because she is really cool and powerful. I dressed as her for Halloween, I hope she doesn\u2019t turn bad,\u201d said Calkins, 9.<\/p>\n<p>The library was careful to adversise the proper canon timeline for the Star Wars franchise.<\/p>\n<p>Canon is everything that happens in the universe, not just the movies but the books, TV shows, video games, and comics.<\/p>\n<p>There were charts laying out everything that happens in the Star Wars timeline, which impressed fan Ryan Crowell, 17.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s nice to see even the library paying attention to the canon because there can be a lot of confusion around what is and isn\u2019t canon, especially since Disney wiped the slate clean a few years ago,\u201d Crowell said.<\/p>\n<p>Crowell came in search of an old Star Wars novel titled \u201cSplinter of the Mind&#8217;s Eye\u201d which was written as a follow-up to the original Star Wars film in case the film bombed as it was expected to do.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSplinter of the Mind&#8217;s Eye\u201d was written by Alan Dean Foster and was given the exact instructions by George Lucas to write it so it could be adapted as a lower budget film.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI find it so fascinating that it could have been the follow up to &#8216;A New Hope,&#8217; instead of Empire,\u201d said Crowell.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve heard it isn\u2019t great but it\u2019s an interesting part of the franchise\u2019s history.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>I love Star Wars because there are always good guys like Luke Skywalker to stop the bad guys. &#8211; Aiden Gibbony<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The event managed to bring in people of all ages to share enjoyment of one thing Star Wars.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<div class=\"mh-excerpt\"><p>With the release of the flim &#8216;Star Wars: The Last Jedi,&#8217; only days away, the Calgary Public Library decided to capitalize the excitement with a new Star Wars based event.
