{"id":41261,"date":"2017-12-07T10:22:36","date_gmt":"2017-12-07T17:22:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/saitjournalism.ca\/?p=41261"},"modified":"2021-02-07T20:09:02","modified_gmt":"2021-02-08T03:09:02","slug":"haunting-red-dresses-return-to-campus-for-second-year","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/saitjournalism.ca\/thepress\/2017\/12\/07\/haunting-red-dresses-return-to-campus-for-second-year\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;Haunting&#8217; red dresses return to campus for second year"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>[dropcap]T[\/dropcap]he red dresses have returned to SAIT.<\/p>\n<p>For the second year in a row, dresses bearing cards telling the stories of indigenous women who have been murdered or gone missing in Canada have been hung in the halls of buildings on campus, and from trees outside.<\/p>\n<p>The dresses are a reminder of a problem that hasn&#8217;t been addressed, and isn&#8217;t going away.<\/p>\n<p>The display was to remain until Dec. 9.<\/p>\n<p>Jean Dube of Chinook Lodge, who is in charge of this project, said she hopes the dresses will show just how big the issue of the fate of these women still is.<\/p>\n<p>The atrium of the Stan Grad Building has been decorated with dresses hanging from the second floor.<\/p>\n<p>The feeling of it is haunting, with students walking by, glancing, and deciding not to sit below them.<\/p>\n<p>Paola Agusti, a student at SAIT, stopped on Dec. 4, to look at the many dresses being displayed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs soon as I came in here I saw it right away,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_41263\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-41263\" style=\"width: 615px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-41263\" src=\"http:\/\/saitjournalism.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/20171204-TK-0336.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"615\" height=\"410\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-41263\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><strong>Can&#8217;t look away<\/strong>Paola Agusti is compelled to stop and look at the haunting site of so many red dresses at SAIT in Calgary on Monday, Dec. 4, 2017. But realizing that all the victims were indigenous women was shocking.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a powerful statement,\u201d Agusti said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt really looks like a missing women,\u201d she said. \u201cThey\u2019re not there anymore.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Courtney Garlough of the Alumni and Fund Development office at SAIT, also paused while crossing the campus to look at one of the dresses hanging outside.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think it\u2019s a moving and impactful statement,\u201d said Garlough, who also viewed the display last year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt should be upfront for people to see,&#8221; she said. &#8220;It\u2019s a good awareness piece.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Blake Van Buren, a student at ACAD, stopped to take a look at the same dress.<\/p>\n<p>He said he hadn\u2019t heard about this issue before and initially thought someone had lost some clothing.<\/p>\n<p>Getting closer he saw the card detailing the story of one of the missing indigenous women in Ontario.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSeems pretty tragic as well as far away,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI hope that they find her.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_41264\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-41264\" style=\"width: 615px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-41264\" src=\"http:\/\/saitjournalism.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/20171204-TK-0326-3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"615\" height=\"410\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-41264\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><strong>A lone dress <\/strong>A red dress stands to greet people with a case on a missing and murdered indigenous women at SAIT in Calgary on Monday, Dec. 4, 2017.
