{"id":42289,"date":"2018-03-07T10:39:39","date_gmt":"2018-03-07T17:39:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/saitjournalism.ca\/?p=42289"},"modified":"2018-03-07T10:39:39","modified_gmt":"2018-03-07T17:39:39","slug":"weeks-after-nude-swim-cancelled-some-people-still-angry-about-it","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/saitjournalism.ca\/thepress\/2018\/03\/07\/weeks-after-nude-swim-cancelled-some-people-still-angry-about-it\/","title":{"rendered":"Weeks after nude swim cancelled, some people still angry about it"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"wpsdc-drop-cap\">P<\/span>lans for a nudist swim at Calgary\u2019s Southland Leisure Centre in January have some Calgarians saying that they won\u2019t be returning to the centre in the future.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/calgarynuderecreation.ca\">The Calgary Nude Recreation club<\/a> organized for the swim to take place on Thursday, Jan. 11. But the event was later cancelled by the city, due to backlash from the community, and security concerns.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"wpsdc-drop-cap\">I<\/span>n the wake of the controversy, egular patron of the Southland Leisure Centre, Andrew McIntyre, said that he was reconsidering using the centre\u2019s facilities.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wasn\u2019t happy with the naked swim in general,\u201d said McIntyre. \u201cBut I really wasn\u2019t happy that it was going to be at Southland.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy family and I always use the pool there, and I use the gym,\u201d said McIntyre. \u201cIt\u2019s just gross to me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy would I want to swim somewhere where I know other people were butt-naked?\u201d McIntyre asked.<\/p>\n<p>McIntyre said that although he is pleased that the swim was cancelled, he is still upset with the centre for planning the event in the first place.<\/p>\n<p>Rhondda Kerr, guest services manager at the Trico Centre for Family Wellness, said that many people have been mistaking the Trico Centre for Southland.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe were receiving a lot of complaints and concerns about the nude swim when it was still a go,\u201d said Kerr. \u201cWe\u2019re still getting complaints about it even now.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMany customers get the centres mixed up because they aren\u2019t too far apart,\u201d said Kerr.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSouthland is only about an eight-minute drive from here, so a lot of people get us mixed up on a regular basis.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey also assume that the Trico Centre is a City of Calgary facility when we\u2019re not,\u201d said Kerr.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not too big of a deal, but it is unfortunate that our guest services staff are being forced to deal with customer issues about the nude swim, considering that our facility had nothing to do with it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Trico is on Bonaventure Drive S.E., just east of SouthCentre mall, while Southland is on 90th Avenue S.W., west of 14th Street.<\/p>\n<p>Keatin Weinberger, guest services associate at the Trico Centre, said that he has talked to many customers who were upset because of the event.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlmost everyone that I talk to, even if it\u2019s just for a bit, brings up something about the naked swim,\u201d said Weinberger. \u201cI got a lot of unusual questions about it too.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne person asked me if we were going to clean the pool in a special way afterwards,\u201d said Weinberger.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter I told them that we weren\u2019t having the swim at our location, they just went on about how pissed they were about it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt didn\u2019t bother me too much to hear everyone complain about it though,\u201d said Weinberger. \u201cI liked hearing what everyone had to say.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Why would I want to swim somewhere where I know other people were butt-naked? &#8211; Andrew McIntyre<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Not everyone was upset about the nude swim, however.<\/p>\n<p>Jamie Bray, a long-time member at the Trico Centre, said that she was excited when she heard news about the swim.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was really disappointed when they cancelled it actually,\u201d said Bray.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI bought a membership at Trico because the pool is warmer here, but I don\u2019t have a problem with Southland\u2019s facilities at all.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was honestly excited about the nude swim and I was planning on attending if I could get a ticket,\u201d said Bray.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI get why a lot of people had concerns about it, but it was only for one night.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not an event made for creepy or perverted people,\u201d said Bray. \u201cEveryone takes things way too seriously these days.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bray said that she hopes the city will allow another nude swim or a different nude event to take place sometime in the future, and said that she hopes Calgarians will become more open to the idea.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<div class=\"mh-excerpt\"><p>Plans for a nudist swim at Calgary\u2019s Southland Leisure Centre in January have some Calgarians saying that they won\u2019t be returning to the centre in the future.
