{"id":42820,"date":"2018-03-11T13:27:23","date_gmt":"2018-03-11T19:27:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/saitjournalism.ca\/?p=42820"},"modified":"2021-02-08T07:29:31","modified_gmt":"2021-02-08T14:29:31","slug":"bike-sharing-coming-to-city","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/saitjournalism.ca\/thepress\/2018\/03\/11\/bike-sharing-coming-to-city\/","title":{"rendered":"Bike-sharing coming to city"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"wpsdc-drop-cap\">W<\/span>alking and cycling as a means to commute has grown in the last five years among Calgarians, with cycling in winter becoming highly popular.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"wpsdc-drop-cap\">C<\/span>algary came from being a car-only city centre to\u00a0one that accommodates\u00a0many commuters biking to-and-around the downtown core.<\/p>\n<p>Noting the rise in cyclists,\u00a0the city has cleared the snow on bike lanes before getting to the main routes, in part due to statistics showing that Calgary has had a rise in cycling to work in the last five years.<\/p>\n<p>City statistics show that cycle commuting declines in winter.<\/p>\n<p>But each year, it grows compared to the previous year. (Photo by Aman Kapila\/The Press)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Calgary went from having cycling being discouraged in the winter to encouraged in a five-year span.<\/p>\n<p>At the University of Calgary (U of C) 20 students attended a recent event to talk and spread awareness about cycling in the city.<\/p>\n<p>Tom Babin led the event as he discussed about how he started winter cycling and how it caught on in Calgary and around the world.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think most cities until now have not been able to run bike share systems,\u201d Babin said.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_42823\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-42823\" style=\"width: 615px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-42823\" src=\"http:\/\/saitjournalism.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/20180126-S2-Winter-Cycling-AK-0017.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"615\" height=\"923\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-42823\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><strong>Crazy Cyclist:\u00a0<\/strong> Tom Babin makes a case at the U of C for winter cycling and bike sharing in Calgary. (Photo by Aman Kapila\/The Press)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Bike-sharing is coming to Calgary and will be accessible, and affordable for most residents.<\/p>\n<p>In cities that already have an existing bike-sharing infrastructure, such as New York, bike-shares have a start-up fee and then you pay every time you take a bike.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBike-sharing has only been in North America for six months,\u201d Babin said.<\/p>\n<p>A key bidder for Calgary\u2019s bike sharing program is Dockless, a company that doesn\u2019t have much infrastructure to add, making it cost effective for Calgarians.<\/p>\n<p>Dockless makes it so a rider can pick up and leave a bike anywhere in the city, much like Car2Go.<\/p>\n<p>However, the company does acknowledge that this may lead to some people putting the bikes in places that are less than ideal to retrieve them from.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Bike sharing has only been in North America for six months. &#8211; Tom Babin<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Some Calgarians, however, have doubts about bike-sharing programs.<\/p>\n<p>James Tees thinks that it can be a good idea for most of the cyclists, though Tees isn\u2019t convinced himself, as he has his own bike.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t think it\u2019s for me, just knowing someone else has been using the same bike [that I&#8217;ve] been [riding],\u201d Tees said.<\/p>\n<p>Though Tees isn\u2019t enthused about the idea he hopes it would get people out of their houses for the sake of recreation.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<div class=\"mh-excerpt\"><p>Walking and cycling as a means to commute has grown in the last five years among Calgarians, with cycling in winter becoming highly popular.
