{"id":43467,"date":"2018-03-11T10:27:10","date_gmt":"2018-03-11T16:27:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/saitjournalism.ca\/?p=43467"},"modified":"2018-03-11T10:27:10","modified_gmt":"2018-03-11T16:27:10","slug":"calgarians-march-to-free-ahed-tamimi","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/saitjournalism.ca\/thepress\/2018\/03\/11\/calgarians-march-to-free-ahed-tamimi\/","title":{"rendered":"Calgarians march to free Ahed Tamimi"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"wpsdc-drop-cap\">T<\/span>he Walk for Ahed was held on Feb. 25 in front of city hall, where more than 20 individuals showed their support.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"wpsdc-drop-cap\">\u201c<\/span>Ahed Tamimi fully deserves our help,\u201d said Badiuk Brandon, one of the speakers and the event planner for the walk.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe and all the other children that are locked up should be released back home to where they belong.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Brandon is a local activist fighting for the rights of all the detained Palestinian children.<\/p>\n<p>Tamimi was apprehended for punching an Israeli officer after the soldier shot her cousin with a rubber bullet.<\/p>\n<p>The bullet left her cousin critically injured and in a coma for more than 10 days.<\/p>\n<p>Tamimi, aged 16, was arrested on Dec. 19, 2017, and has been placed in a military detention facility, awaiting trail.<\/p>\n<p>If convicted, Tamimi could face up to 10 years in an Israeli jail.<\/p>\n<p>Her mother was later imprisoned for posting the video of her arrest, which has now been viewed by millions around the world.<\/p>\n<p>One of the local protesters, Sheila Medina, believes that injustice was served when it came to the Palestinian children.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe punched a soldier and is now confined behind bars. The soldier who left her cousin completely brain damaged is still roaming free,\u201d said\u00a0Medina in a face-to-face interview.<\/p>\n<p>Holding the \u2018Peace and Justice for Palestine\u2019 sign, Medina said the world should unite and free Tamimi so she can fulfill her childhood dream.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe whole world is protesting for Ahed to be free and I won\u2019t be satisfied until she achieves her dream to visit the sea with her family.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Born in Nabi Salih, a village in the occupied West Bank, Tamimi began protesting at the age of 13.<\/p>\n<p>There are many videos of her posted on YouTube.<\/p>\n<p>She has become a symbol of resistance and is now a well-known activist around the world.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAhed is not a terrorist but a freedom fighter,\u201d said Victor Divino, one of the protestors and father to Palestinian children.<\/p>\n<p>He said Tamimi could be deprived the next 10 years of her life if the world doesn\u2019t unite for her freedom.<\/p>\n<p>More than 700 letters of solidarity written by the U.S. Jews have been sent to Tamimi\u2019s family.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<div class=\"mh-excerpt\"><p>A walk for Ahed Tamimi was held on Feb.25, 2018 in front of city hall, Calgary where more than 20 individuals attended and showed their support to free Ahed Tamimi.<br \/>\nAhed, 16, has been incarcerated by the Israeli military and is currently awaiting her trial.
