{"id":44094,"date":"2018-04-17T14:09:57","date_gmt":"2018-04-17T20:09:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/saitjournalism.ca\/?p=44094"},"modified":"2018-04-17T14:09:57","modified_gmt":"2018-04-17T20:09:57","slug":"citys-oldest-comic-and-toy-show-still-going-strong","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/saitjournalism.ca\/thepress\/2018\/04\/17\/citys-oldest-comic-and-toy-show-still-going-strong\/","title":{"rendered":"City&#8217;s oldest comic and toy show still going strong"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span class=\"wpsdc-drop-cap\">A<\/span>n eclectic mix of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.comicandtoy.ca\/\">costume, character, and retailing<\/a> filled the the Red and White Club at McMahon Stadium.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Held on March 11, the Red &amp; White Comic and Toy Expo was held in celebration of comics and toys. It also gave collectors an opportunity to pick up the one issue missing from their collections.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Leslie-Ann Kalman, a retailer at the show, thought that the expo was a great success for local businesses and artists to showcase their products and talents.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe\u2019ve got to grab them by the shirt and bring them in,\u201d said Kalman, who works for Art in the City.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Art in the City sells posters designed around popular movies, sports, and pop culture icons. It is the store\u2019s second year at the event.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe people (here) are so much fun,\u201d said Kalman.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kalman\u2019s strategy for getting customers is to ask them questions about what they are wearing and then try and match a product to their individual tastes and interests.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI\u2019ve had some wonderful conversations with people over the last two years. Some people come dressed in the most interesting things,\u201d she said.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The expo had many attendees cosplaying as various characters.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ky Olsen was one of them, cosplaying as Cloud Strife from the video game <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Final Fantasy VII<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI\u2019ve had people walking by me and whispering, \u2018Wow, that\u2019s Cloud,\u2019 all day,\u201d said Olsen.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThis has been really amazing.\u201d<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Olsen was part of a group of four women dressed up in cosplay from various video game series, including <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/playoverwatch.com\/en-us\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Overwatch<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Metroid\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Metroid <\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">series.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During the event, there were two costume contests for those who dressed up, one for people under 13, and another for those older than that.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to Ben Falconer, one of the organizers of the expo, the event draws more than 1,500 people on average during its one day of operation and has more than 40 people showcasing comics, with 10-15 people showcasing local art.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"wpsdc-drop-cap\">J<\/span>ason Wenzel, who dressed as a <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ghostbusters\">Ghostbuster<\/a>, believes that things like the comic and toy show are good for Calgary.<\/p>\n<p>Wenzel and his Ghostbusting partner Sean Nicholson walked around the show dressed in full gear from the movie Ghostbusters and spent a lot of time showing off the creativity that went into designing replicas of the movie&#8217;s props.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The expo has been held every year for the past 18 years and was the first of its kind in Calgary.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The expo will return this fall.
