{"id":44127,"date":"2018-04-16T11:15:33","date_gmt":"2018-04-16T17:15:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/saitjournalism.ca\/?p=44127"},"modified":"2021-02-07T20:45:48","modified_gmt":"2021-02-08T03:45:48","slug":"ywca-celebrates-international-womens-day","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/saitjournalism.ca\/thepress\/2018\/04\/16\/ywca-celebrates-international-womens-day\/","title":{"rendered":"YWCA celebrates International Women&#8217;s Day"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"wpsdc-drop-cap\">C<\/span>algary\u2019s largest women\u2019s organization, <a href=\"http:\/\/YWCA Calgary\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">YWCA Calgary ,\u00a0<\/a>celebrated international women\u2019s day on March 8 by showcasing the <a href=\"http:\/\/&quot;She Who Dares&quot;\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cShe Who Dares\u201d<\/a> exhibit.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"wpsdc-drop-cap\">\u201c<\/span>Our goal for this project was to tell the stories of 150 women who have shaped our community since before Confederation,\u201d vice-president of YWCA Elsbeth Mehrer said.<\/p>\n<p>The She Who Dares exhibit was created to shine a light on women who are often under-represented in the history books, or whose contributions don\u2019t seem to count in the same way that men\u2019s contributions do, Mehrer added.<\/p>\n<p>YWCA Calgary wanted to celebrate women who were the first females in their industry, women who started art festivals, and women who contributed to the economy in a large way.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBeing able to share, tell some of the stories, and celebrate that those contributions matter, is what we were trying to do,\u201d Mehrer added.<\/p>\n<p>YWCA Calgary supports women who are going through a crisis, unemployed, suffering from domestic violence, or seeking shelter, Mehrer added.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cInternational women\u2019s day is an important day to reflect on the state of women in Calgary.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mehrer added, \u201cThis day has been observed for many years with an eye to recognize the continued inequalities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Although there have been movements to ensure gender equality, there is still a lot of work that needs to be done, Mehrer added.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPay equality, and recognizing equivalent work with equal pay, to me, is the next front.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>It\u2019s about thinking to yourself, what would you do differently if you knew better?- Elsbeth Mehrer<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>As gender diverse people, its important to be introspective and think about how others are upholding their values, and challenge someone else who may have made a sexist comment, or is holding someone else back.<\/p>\n<p>The statistics and evidence is clear as to why we as a society need a women\u2019s day, Mehrer added.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWomen in Alberta are earning 68 cents to every dollar that a man earns.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis battle for equality isn\u2019t done yet.
