T<\/span>he SAIT Trojan\u2019s basketball team have captured a bronze medal in this year’s ACAC championship tournament.<\/p>\n

T<\/span>he third-place finish capped a strong season for the women’s team.<\/p>\n

The Trojans played their first game tournament on March 1 when they took on the NAIT Ooks. They had a strong start and took a 12-3 lead heading into the second quarter.<\/p>\n

\u2018\u2019For me personally I was really exited and really nervous,”\u00a0said Hope Lewis, a second year guard. “It was little nerve-racking but we had a solid start.\u2018\u2019<\/p>\n

The Trojans showed great ball movement on the offensive end in the first half. They were continually going into the paint and drawing fouls on the Ooks throughout the game.<\/p>\n

One of the keys to the Trojans’ 68-65 victory was the three point shot.<\/p>\n

The three pointers helped with to swing the momentum of the game. They also helped them the Trojans keep the lead they had throughout the game.<\/p>\n

\u2018\u2019Yeah for sure Alicia (Tan) and Alexa (Tan) can definitely shoot the ball. When they get hot it gets everybody exited and gets the momentum going for sure,” said Lewis.<\/p>\n

The Trojans played solid defense throughout the game, which helped them get stops when they needed to. Their defense helped them with getting better chances and some fast break points on the offensive end.<\/p>\n

\u2018\u2019 We take pride in our defense and our defense is usually where we get our energy and hyped about and that kind of leads to our offence, \u2018\u2019 said Melissa Woolley, a fourth-year guard.<\/p>\n

The Trojans hoped to make some improvements to their game before the semi-final on Friday against the Medicine Hat Rattlers on March 2.<\/p>\n

The Trojans had a slow start, but they got better and finished the first quarter with a 13-9 lead. They led the Rattlers 19-16 at the half.<\/p>\n

In the second half, the Trojans struggled, and became one dimensional on offense. They committed some bad turnovers and got unlucky with the officiating.<\/p>\n

\u2018\u2019It was a hard way to take a loss,” said Lewis.<\/p>\n

The Trojans started to come back in the fourth quarter. They fought hard but it wasn\u2019t enough as they lost the semi-final to the Rattlers by a score of 50\u201342.<\/p>\n

\u2018\u2019 I think everyone fought hard. We fought to the very end. It was a tough loss, \u2018\u2019 said Melanie Thera, a fourth-year centre.<\/p>\n

The Trojans headed into to the Bronze Medal Game on March 3 with a chance to come out of the tournament with a medal.<\/p>\n

The Trojans took on the Lakeland College Rustlers and held the lead throughout the first half. They continued their strong play into the second half.<\/p>\n

The result was a 53-47 win and the team’s second straight bronze medal.<\/p>\n

\u2018\u2019 Considering that everyone was down yesterday, we came together as a team and stepped it up. I don\u2019t think anybody finished the season with any regrets which is a positive, \u2018\u2019 said Lewis.<\/p>\n

\u2018\u2019Its definitely nice and our quote of the day was rose gold is better than no gold and its nice to go home with hardware. It’s better than nothing,” said Lewis.<\/p>\n
