(Photo by Deanna Montalvo\/The Press)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>[dropcap]S[\/dropcap]tudents at the University of Calgary students have been told they will have to light up elsewhere if they want to smoke pot in public after the Oct. 17 legalization date.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucalgary.ca\/utoday\/issue\/2018-09-24\/ucalgarys-cannabis-policy-unpacked\">The policy<\/a> was announced at the end of last month by the institution.<\/p>\n<p>Some students feel the policy is strange considering the use of other recreational products is allowed on campus.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople can get as drunk as they want at the Den,\u201d Kayla Gavin, a third-year political science student, said in an interview.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m pretty sure smoking weed would be less messy and less work for campus security,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Gavin also mentioned the end-of-year Bermuda Shorts Day party on campus is \u201cessentially a free-for-all.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>So why couldn\u2019t the consumption of marijuana be treated in the same way considering, she said, given that it\u2019s arguably less detrimental to bystanders.<\/p>\n<p>Hee-Young Shi, a first-year engineering student, said she doesn\u2019t smoke or drink, but isn\u2019t affected by people who do.<\/p>\n<p>If people want to smoke marijuana or consume it in any other way, it wouldn\u2019t affect her and they should be free to partake at their leisure \u201cjust like having a beer at the Den over lunch.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat\u2019s the difference?\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>The policy, which mimics the City of Calgary\u2019s marijuana policy, seems convoluted to Tyler Huget, who lives in one of the residence buildings.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re allowed to drink, but no weed,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>U of C has also decided, as landlords, to not allow the consumption of marijuana in residential buildings either, based on the fact that smoking of any kind is already forbidden.<\/p>\n<p>However, smoking pot five metres from the entrances to the buildings is still prohibited even though the smoking of cigarettes is not.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo they\u2019re treating it like tobacco in res[idence], but as alcohol on campus,\u201d said Huget.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s really not clear.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Shi said she thinks the confusion arises simply because \u201cit\u2019s all so new,\u201d and it will just take some time to iron out.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_46029\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-46029\" style=\"width: 2560px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-46029 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/saitjournalism.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/20181017-S2-U-of-C-Cannabis-DM-0014.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1429\" srcset=\"https:\/\/saitjournalism.ca\/thepress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/20181017-S2-U-of-C-Cannabis-DM-0014.jpg 2560w, https:\/\/saitjournalism.ca\/thepress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/20181017-S2-U-of-C-Cannabis-DM-0014-300x167.jpg 300w, https:\/\/saitjournalism.ca\/thepress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/20181017-S2-U-of-C-Cannabis-DM-0014-768x429.jpg 768w, https:\/\/saitjournalism.ca\/thepress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/20181017-S2-U-of-C-Cannabis-DM-0014-1024x572.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 2560px) 100vw, 2560px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-46029\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><strong>No smoking here:<\/strong> Students relax on the U of C campus on Canada&#8217;s cannabis legalization day, Wednesday, Oct. 17, 2018. (Photo by Deanna Montalvo\/The Press)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In the meantime the University of Calgary\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucalgary.ca\/wellnesscentre\/pass\">Post Alcohol Support Space<\/a>, which offers medical attention to students who have consumed too much alcohol, will extend its services to those who have consumed too much cannabis.<\/p>\n<p>The space is anonymous and students aren\u2019t disciplined for using its services.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>I\u2019m pretty sure smoking weed would be less messy and less work for campus security. &#8211; Kayla Gavin<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Like SAIT, which released a statement on Oct. 16 that read, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sait.ca\/about-sait\/media-centre\/news-and-events\/news\/2018-10-15-the-highs-and-lows-of-cannabis-use\">it\u2019s a no at SAIT<\/a>,\u201d the University of Calgary\u2019s policy states that there in no acceptable place on campus to consume recreational cannabis.<\/p>\n<p>Linda Dalgetty, the U of C\u2019s vice-president of finance and services, told the student news website <em>The<\/em> <em>Gauntlet<\/em> in an interview, there won\u2019t be punishment for students found consuming pot on campus.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf people are smoking cannabis, they will be asked to put out the joint because it\u2019s not legal on our campus,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<div class=\"mh-excerpt\"><p>[dropcap]S[\/dropcap]tudents at the University of Calgary students have been told they will have to light up elsewhere if they want to smoke pot in public after the Oct. 17 legalization date.
