(Photo by Inder Minhas \/The Press)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span class=\"wpsdc-drop-cap\">S<\/span>ome small business owners in Calgary are warming up to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alberta.ca\/alberta-minimum-wage-changes.aspx\">minimum-wage<\/a> hike in Alberta.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"wpsdc-drop-cap\">A<\/span>fter a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.retailcouncil.org\/resources\/quick-facts\/minimum-wage-by-province\/\">$15 per hour\u00a0<\/a> minimum wage was set in Alberta on Oct. 1, many business owners expressed opposition to the new pay level, which was an increase of $1.40 per hour.<\/p>\n<p>But some have begun to like the idea of an increased wage.<\/p>\n<p>According to the Alberta government website, poverty among low-wage workers was what drove lawmakers to introduce the increase.<\/p>\n<p>More than 254,000 people, or 11 per cent of employees in Alberta, were making less than $15 an hour prior to the hike.<\/p>\n<p>In 2017, 63 per cent were low-wage earning females, and 37 per cent are working parents. About 76 per cent had permanent jobs that made less than what is considered minimum wage in November, 2018.<\/p>\n<p>Some managers and private business owners were shocked to learn how bad some people had in Alberta.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI remember thinking that an increase would mean less money for me,\u201d said Dupinder Dhatta, a restaurant owner.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cReading more about these things in the last year has given me hope for the average guy working minimum wage.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dhutta was born in South Africa but moved to London when he was three to live with his aunt and uncle.<\/p>\n<p>His family could afford to send him to good schools, and when he moved to Canada in the late 90\u2019s, they gave him money to start up his own business.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt can be hard to accept that your condition is different than a lot of other people,\u201d said Dhutta.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI grew up pretty well and had loads of opportunities to get to where I am today.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dhutta said that the minimum wage hike is overdue for the working class, and he is happy to help working families.<\/p>\n<p>He believes that the Alberta government is empathetic to the plight of working people.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m proud to support the minimum wage increase,\u201d said Dhutta. \u201cI hope we never end up like America.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Balwinder Singh, a convenience store manager, said that it\u2019s great to see people get better-paying opportunities in Alberta.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMost of my guys working for me are students,\u201d said Singh.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey eat and live on minimum wage.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Singh said that it\u2019s a relief that some of the people that work for him can afford a bit more wiggle room when it comes to finances.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have friends who complain about not making enough money after paying their employees,\u201d said Singh.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat means you can\u2019t afford to stay in business.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Singh said that it\u2019s important to keep pushing the government to have inflation be taken into account when adjusting the minimum wage.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI studied engineering back home in India,\u201d said Singh.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is a huge gap in pay right now and I\u2019m doing my part to help out Canadians.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Singh\u2019s employee, Rajesh Kumar, said that he enjoys being paid a little bit better, and he is currently saving money to start his own business in Calgary.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt really helps me a bit to make extra money,\u201d said Kumar. \u201cEvery bit counts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nassar Uezi, a Pizza 73 worker, said that the government should try to focus on providing better <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alberta.ca\/alberta-adult-health-benefit.aspx\">benefits<\/a> for people who work minimum wage jobs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019d like to see stuff that covers vision and dental in the future,\u201d said Uezi.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf the government cares about working people they need to show it more.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Uezi said that he\u2019s hoping that the increase in minimum wage will help get Albertans out of poverty.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI see the downturn in the economy and this might be the boost needed to help Alberta,\u201d said Uezi.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_47409\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-47409\" style=\"width: 2560px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-47409\" src=\"http:\/\/saitjournalism.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/20181112-S4-Minimum-Wage-Post-Increase-Story-IM-1352.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1707\" srcset=\"https:\/\/saitjournalism.ca\/thepress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/20181112-S4-Minimum-Wage-Post-Increase-Story-IM-1352.jpg 2560w, https:\/\/saitjournalism.ca\/thepress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/20181112-S4-Minimum-Wage-Post-Increase-Story-IM-1352-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/saitjournalism.ca\/thepress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/20181112-S4-Minimum-Wage-Post-Increase-Story-IM-1352-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/saitjournalism.ca\/thepress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/20181112-S4-Minimum-Wage-Post-Increase-Story-IM-1352-1024x683.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 2560px) 100vw, 2560px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-47409\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><strong>Boxman: <\/strong>BalwinderSingh preparing for inventory at his store, on Nov. 12, 2018.
