T<\/span>he SAIT Trojans women\u2019s hockey team is sitting in fifth place overall this season, one spot below the top four playoff contenders, and\u00a0keeping their heads up despite the average start to the season.<\/p>\n

The Trojans managed to come away with a win after playing against MacEwan University on Nov. 17\u00a0following a five game losing streak.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe were just taking too many penalties at the beginning of the month,\u201d said Kelsey Leifson, the head coach.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe focus hasn\u2019t changed since the beginning of the season, but we definitely need to focus on moving our feet and being more accountable moving forward,\u201d Leifson added.<\/p>\n

The Christmas break saw the Trojans practicing hard in order to have a better chance of clinching the last playoff spot in the new year.<\/p>\n

\u201cObviously the girls all have to focus on their studies but we plan on doing dry land training and spending lots of time on the ice until our next game [Jan. 10 against the Olds College Broncos],” said the coach.<\/p>\n

Leifson said she felt it was more than possible for the team to make it to playoffs if the players work harder.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur goal for the New Year is to try and work our way into a playoff spot.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Trojans split a pair of games against Olds to begin the second half of the season, and face home-and-home weekend series against two teams ahead of them in the standings, Red Deer College and MacEwan College, to round out January.<\/p>\n
