Cave is an American artist whose work took up the featured spot at the Glenbow Museum until Sept. 22.(Photo by Brandon Wong\/The Press)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span class=\"wpsdc-drop-cap\">T<\/span>he Glenbow Museum is preparing to change a number of its exhibitions on Oct. 19<sup>th<\/sup> and Sarah Todd, one of the museum\u2019s art curators, has provided a preview of what\u2019s to come.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.glenbow.org\/\">The Glenbow<\/a> had several exhibitions on display such as Second Skin, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.glenbow.org\/exhibitions\/ed-pien-our-beloved\/\">Our Beloved by Ed Pien<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.glenbow.org\/exhibitions\/nick-cave-feat\/\">Feat. by Nick Cave<\/a> which was the featured show, over the summer and early falll.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"wpsdc-drop-cap\">A<\/span>ll of these are considered travelling exhibits departed the Glenbow Museum by Sept. 22.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Glenbow has a range of different exhibitions every season, so some of them are travelling shows,\u201d Todd said. \u201cTravelling shows, like the Nick Cave exhibit, are a limited time thing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Replacing the marquee Nick Cave exhibition is a show by Sybil Andrews, an English-Canadian artist who specializes in printmaking and linoleum.<\/p>\n<p>Todd said visitors can expect colourful, beautiful, retro, and graphic prints as the museum hosts the world\u2019s largest collection of Andrews&#8217; artwork.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSybil Andrews was active during the \u201830s and \u201840s,\u201d Todd said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe forget that being an artist during this time was not a normal occupation for a woman.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Todd emphasized that Andrews exhibition will showcase work that pioneered printmaking.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_50537\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-50537\" style=\"width: 1024px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-50537 size-large\" title=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/saitjournalism.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/20190912New-Glenbow-Exhibitions0004-1024x680.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"680\" srcset=\"https:\/\/saitjournalism.ca\/thepress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/20190912New-Glenbow-Exhibitions0004-1024x680.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/saitjournalism.ca\/thepress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/20190912New-Glenbow-Exhibitions0004-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/saitjournalism.ca\/thepress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/20190912New-Glenbow-Exhibitions0004-768x510.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-50537\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><strong>Curator of Creativity:<\/strong> Sarah Todd, a curator at the Glenbow Museum,with part of the Nick Cave exhibition on Sept. 12. (Photo by Brandon Wong\/The Press)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cBeing an artist in the \u201830s meant you\u2019d be working with paint primarily,\u201d Todd said. \u201cShe was working with new technology.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Alongside the Sybil Andrews exhibit there will also be an exhibition called Extraordinary Objects.<\/p>\n<p>Extraordinary Objects will be a contemporary collection replacing Our Beloved by Ed Pien.<\/p>\n<p>The exhibit will feature pieces from five different artists, created from normal, everyday materials.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Calgary doesn\u2019t give itself enough credit as a community that cares about culture. &#8211; Sarah Todd<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cBy normal materials, we usually mean disposable materials,\u201d Todd said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTaking everyday objects and elevating them into the realm of fine art is the key theme of this new exhibit.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Todd said that the Extraordinary Objects will have pieces created out of underwear, linoleum, and other material.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s just looking at the potential of the stuff that surrounds us,\u201d Todd said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s making the ordinary extraordinary through material intervention.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>To celebrate the Sybil Andrews collection, the Glenbow Museum has also decided to create a publication to coincide with the launch of the exhibition, something that isn\u2019t done often.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaking books is hard and time consuming,\u201d Todd said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut for very special exhibitions, like the Sybil Andrews exhibition, when we feel we can add something to the discourse around that art, we will make a publication.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Glenbow will hold a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.glenbow.org\/programs\/launch-party-october-19\/\">launch party<\/a> on Oct. 19<sup>th<\/sup> for the new exhibitions which is also open to the public.<\/p>\n<p>Admission to the launch party will be by donation.<\/p>\n<p>Todd said that new visitors to the Glenbow should consider coming on the first Thursday of each month when admission is free.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCalgary doesn\u2019t give itself enough credit as a community that cares about culture,\u201d Todd said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need art and culture to be the world class city that Calgary aspires to be.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_50541\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-50541\" style=\"width: 680px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-50541 size-large\" title=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/saitjournalism.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/20190912New-Glenbow-Exhibitions0001-1-680x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"680\" height=\"1024\" srcset=\"https:\/\/saitjournalism.ca\/thepress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/20190912New-Glenbow-Exhibitions0001-1-680x1024.jpg 680w, https:\/\/saitjournalism.ca\/thepress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/20190912New-Glenbow-Exhibitions0001-1-199x300.jpg 199w, https:\/\/saitjournalism.ca\/thepress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/20190912New-Glenbow-Exhibitions0001-1-768x1156.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 680px) 100vw, 680px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-50541\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><strong>Labour of Identity: <\/strong>An untitled work by Nick Cave hangs at the Glenbow Museum on Sept. 12.
