(Photo by Joel Fournier\/The Press)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span class=\"wpsdc-drop-cap\">O<\/span>n Sept. 15, Calgary held its 38<sup>th<\/sup> annual Terry Fox Run at Fort Calgary to raise money for cancer research.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"wpsdc-drop-cap\">S<\/span>ince Terry Fox\u2019s original Marathon of Hope came to an end on Sept. 1 1980, annual charity runs have been held across Canada, and in many other countries, to raise funds in order to contribute to cancer research efforts in honour of his legacy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was one of the greatest Canadians,\u201d said Don Cowie who has been running in the Terry Fox for 36 years.<\/p>\n<p>Cowie, who has fought the same cancer that Fox had, said, \u201che accomplished so much in such a short time, you can only think of what he might have accomplished if he was here longer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Terry Fox was a Canadian athlete who, after being diagnosed with bone cancer, began a run across Canada, in order to raise awareness and funds for cancer research.<\/p>\n<p>He began his run in St. John\u2019s, N.L. and ran across Canada until being forced to stop outside Thunder Bay, Ont. due to his deteriorating health.<\/p>\n<p>The Terry Fox Foundation, the organization that stages the annual event, places a lot of emphasis on the legacy of Terry Fox.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe touched on what it meant to be Canadian,\u201d said Rob Kerr who led the opening ceremonies at the event.<\/p>\n<p>Another cancer survivor, Samantha Andrews, said, \u201cIt\u2019s up to us to keep up the legacy (of the Marathon of Hope) until a cure is found.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to the Terry Fox Foundation, more than $750 million has been raised by the many Terry Fox Runs that have occurred since the event first started.<\/p>\n<p>According to Nicole Squires, the committee chair for Calgary\u2019s run this year, $4.1 million has been raised in Calgary\u2019s runs since 1981.<\/p>\n<p>According to the foundation&#8217;s website, $231,883 has been raised this year alone from the Calgary run, surpassing the event\u2019s goal of $200,000.<\/p>\n<p>Approximately 3.5 million people will participate in a Terry Fox Run in Canada this year.<\/p>\n<p>Cowie said that a lot of people participate in Calgary\u2019s run every year, although attendance has leveled off in recent years.<\/p>\n<p>Addressing the runners at Sunday\u2019s event, Calgary Mayor Naheed Nenshi, spoke of the importance of the yearly event in fostering community, not only in Calgary but across the country.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re here for someone, who in days, weeks, months, or years from now will be sitting in a doctor\u2019s office, and will receive a terrifying diagnosis,\u201d said Nenshi.<\/p>\n<p>He spoke about how Terry Fox\u2019s legacy unites people in communities across Canada, and how that sense of unity gives hope in the fight against cancer.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_50765\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-50765\" style=\"width: 1886px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-50765\" src=\"http:\/\/saitjournalism.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/20190915-Terry-Fox-Run-2019-KF-4148.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1886\" height=\"2560\" srcset=\"https:\/\/saitjournalism.ca\/thepress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/20190915-Terry-Fox-Run-2019-KF-4148.jpg 1886w, https:\/\/saitjournalism.ca\/thepress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/20190915-Terry-Fox-Run-2019-KF-4148-221x300.jpg 221w, https:\/\/saitjournalism.ca\/thepress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/20190915-Terry-Fox-Run-2019-KF-4148-768x1042.jpg 768w, https:\/\/saitjournalism.ca\/thepress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/20190915-Terry-Fox-Run-2019-KF-4148-754x1024.jpg 754w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1886px) 100vw, 1886px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-50765\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Don Cowie, a cancer survivor who has participated in Calgary&#8217;s Terry Fox Run for 36 years, at Fort Calgary on Sept. 15.
