(Photo by Jill Warrack\/The Press)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span class=\"wpsdc-drop-cap\">H<\/span>undreds of Calgarians marched for action on climate change, as\u00a0 International Climate Week wrapped up on Sept. 27.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"wpsdc-drop-cap\">T<\/span>he protest consisted mainly of young adults and students, with some young children and senior citizens also on hand, demanding a healthier environment for future generations.<\/p>\n<p>Protesters shouted \u201cprotect our future, protect our planet,\u201d while marching up and down Stephen Avenue, and all the way back to City Hall.<\/p>\n<p>The event was organized by a group called Fridays for Future.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe will not stop until we get the action we need,\u201d a representative speaker for the group said.<\/p>\n<p>The week leading up to the climate strike was dubbed \u201cWeek for Future.\u201d It consisted of students leaving their classes to rally and protest in order for change to be made for a healthier planet and ecosystem.<\/p>\n<p>The week-long protest was inspired by Swedish teenager, Greta Thunberg, who spoke in support of climate action at the United Nations General Assembly in New York.<\/p>\n<p>Some Calgary young people also spoke up against global warming.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGenerations before me have messed up this planet, and I want a future,\u201d Holly Sullivan, 11, said.<\/p>\n<p>Sullivan, who came to the protest with her dad, said that changes need to be made immediately in order to save the planet.<\/p>\n<p>Even though she is young, she took part because she hopes one day \u201cwe will manage to cut down the oil and gas industry to have a greener future.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_51191\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-51191\" style=\"width: 2560px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-51191\" src=\"http:\/\/saitjournalism.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/20190927-Climate-Strike-JW-0266.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1707\" srcset=\"https:\/\/saitjournalism.ca\/thepress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/20190927-Climate-Strike-JW-0266.jpg 2560w, https:\/\/saitjournalism.ca\/thepress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/20190927-Climate-Strike-JW-0266-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/saitjournalism.ca\/thepress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/20190927-Climate-Strike-JW-0266-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/saitjournalism.ca\/thepress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/20190927-Climate-Strike-JW-0266-1024x683.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 2560px) 100vw, 2560px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-51191\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><strong>Planet over profit:<\/strong> People took to the sidewalks carrying signs in Calgary on Sept. 27, 2019. (Photo by Jill Warrack\/The Press)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Loanne Grund, 61, was at the strike with her daughter and her two young granddaughters.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need to fix the system or our children and grandchildren have no hope,\u201d Grund said.<\/p>\n<p>She wants to see change immediately. Grund hoped Canadians would vote wisely in the Oct. 21 election as \u201cwe don\u2019t have four more years to waste with a promise breaking government,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Many people at the strike claimed to have \u201ceco-anxiety\u201d which is why they protested.<\/p>\n<p>Eco-anxiety is when people become worried or anxious about threats to the environment and ecological disasters such as climate change and pollution.<\/p>\n<p>It is caused from worry about the current state of the environment.<\/p>\n<p>Randy Oule, 59, carried a large sign that read, &#8216;Be an earth angel, vote for your children\u2019s future.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>Oule was at the strike because he believes it\u2019s the right thing to do.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe only have one world, we must take care of it,\u2019 Oule said.<\/p>\n<p>He also hoped people would carefully consider their votes in the next election.<\/p>\n<p>He said that while children are the future, they have no voice in elections until they are 18, so it is important for adults to use their voice for the children now.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few,\u201d Oule said, quoting the character Spock from from the TV series Star Trek.<\/p>\n<p>International Climate week brought over 7.6 million people to the streets to protest in 185 countries all across the world.<\/p>\n<p>Demonstrations were held in many Canadian cities, including Montreal, where Thunberg marched with federal party leaders and a crowd numbering thousands.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_51192\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-51192\" style=\"width: 2307px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-51192\" src=\"http:\/\/saitjournalism.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/20190927-Climate-Strike-JW-0285.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"2307\" height=\"2560\" srcset=\"https:\/\/saitjournalism.ca\/thepress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/20190927-Climate-Strike-JW-0285.jpg 2307w, https:\/\/saitjournalism.ca\/thepress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/20190927-Climate-Strike-JW-0285-270x300.jpg 270w, https:\/\/saitjournalism.ca\/thepress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/20190927-Climate-Strike-JW-0285-768x852.jpg 768w, https:\/\/saitjournalism.ca\/thepress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/20190927-Climate-Strike-JW-0285-923x1024.jpg 923w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 2307px) 100vw, 2307px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-51192\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><strong>Hundreds march: <\/strong>Hundreds of people marched down Stephen Avenue to City Hall Plaza in Calgary on Sept. 27, 2019.
