(Photo by Dawn Ilg\/The Press)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span class=\"wpsdc-drop-cap\">T<\/span>he Calgary Farmers&#8217; Market held its 7th annual Thanksgiving pie bake-off on Oct. 10 at the facility on Heritage Drive S.E.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"wpsdc-drop-cap\">V<\/span>endors submitted their signature pies for judging and also offered them for sale at their own stalls.<\/p>\n<p>Amanda Langbroek, marketing and events co-ordinator for the Calgary Farmers&#8217; Market, was responsible for displaying the pies submitted by contestants for patrons at the sampling table.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThanksgiving is the biggest pie-eating holiday. So a pie bake-off is perfect for charity,\u201d Langbroek said.<\/p>\n<p>The event invited attendees to \u201cgobble it up for charity\u201d with all contributions going to the Calgary Food Bank.<\/p>\n<p>Langbroek estimated that they raised around $20,000 in donations for the food bank at last year\u2019s pie bake-off.<\/p>\n<p>Every $5 that the food bank receives from the bake-off counts for one food item.<\/p>\n<p>According to the Calgary Food Bank&#8217;s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.calgaryfoodbank.com\/about\/\">website,<\/a> their fiscal year from Sept. 1, 2017 to Aug. 31, 2018, affected 180,666 lives and provided 66,204 emergency hampers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe goal is to help all Calgarians.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Calgary Farmers&#8217; Market holds lots of charity events year-round.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.calgaryfarmersmarket.ca\/whats-happening\/events\">upcoming<\/a> holidays that feature the food bank are &#8216;Pictures with the Grinch&#8217; and &#8216;Tea with Mrs. Claus.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>The featured pies were judged by people and judges&#8217; votes, giving vendors double bragging rights for the year.<\/p>\n<p>Participants of the 7th annual pie bake-off were: Mylene Latouche-Gauvin, owner of A Taste of Quebec, with her maple pumpkin pie; Renay Eng-Fisher, owner of Delissitude, with a coconut cr\u00e8me pumpkin pie; Elna Edgar of Innisfail Growers, featuring her rhu-berry pie; Bob Whitworth of Simple Simon Pies, featuring a coconut cr\u00e8me pumpkin pie; and Debbie and David Catling, owners of Yum Bakery, with their sour cherry and sour cream pie.<\/p>\n<p>The last winner of the 6th annual Thanksgiving pie bake-off People&#8217;s Choice award was Simple Simon Pies, with their Mongolian yak cheese pie.<\/p>\n<p>Winner for the People&#8217;s Choice Award 2019, was Edgar Farms&#8217; rhu-berry pie. \u201cThe pies are made on the farm after the last harvest,\u201d said Edgar.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe pastry is hand-made with lard, and our recipe we\u2019ve had for generations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.edgarfarms.com\">Edgar Farms<\/a> is owned and operated by Elna and Doug Edgar, and is one of five farmers who make up Innisfail Growers, specializing in asparagus and peas.<\/p>\n<p>They sell their products mainly out of Innisfail Growers but also can be found in farmers&#8217; markets throughout Alberta.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.yum-bakery.com\">Yum Bakery<\/a>\u00a0claimed the\u00a0Judges\u2019 Choice award for their sour cherry and sour cream pie.<\/p>\n<p>The Catlings of Yum Bakery have a wide variety of baked goods available either online on their site, or at their stall at The Calgary Farmers&#8217; Market.<\/p>\n<p>All the pies sold at this event can be purchased at their individual stores.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_51575\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-51575\" style=\"width: 1707px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-51575\" src=\"http:\/\/saitjournalism.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/20191010-7th-Annual-Thanksgiving-pie-bake-off-DI-0009.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1707\" height=\"2560\" srcset=\"https:\/\/saitjournalism.ca\/thepress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/20191010-7th-Annual-Thanksgiving-pie-bake-off-DI-0009.jpg 1707w, https:\/\/saitjournalism.ca\/thepress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/20191010-7th-Annual-Thanksgiving-pie-bake-off-DI-0009-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/saitjournalism.ca\/thepress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/20191010-7th-Annual-Thanksgiving-pie-bake-off-DI-0009-768x1152.jpg 768w, https:\/\/saitjournalism.ca\/thepress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/20191010-7th-Annual-Thanksgiving-pie-bake-off-DI-0009-683x1024.jpg 683w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1707px) 100vw, 1707px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-51575\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><strong>Bragging rights all year: <\/strong>Ballot box for the People&#8217;s Choice award for best liked pie for the 7th annual Thanksgiving pie bake-off displayed at the Calgary Farmers&#8217; Market on Oct. 10.
