{"id":51795,"date":"2019-11-17T13:02:25","date_gmt":"2019-11-17T20:02:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/saitjournalism.ca\/?p=51795"},"modified":"2019-11-17T13:02:25","modified_gmt":"2019-11-17T20:02:25","slug":"its-the-time-of-year-to-get-a-flu-shot","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/saitjournalism.ca\/thepress\/2019\/11\/17\/its-the-time-of-year-to-get-a-flu-shot\/","title":{"rendered":"It&#8217;s the time of year to get a flu shot"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"wpsdc-drop-cap\">A<\/span>s the flu season approaches, SAIT&#8217;s clinic started preparing flu vaccines for students free of charge as of October 21.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"wpsdc-drop-cap\">\u201c<\/span>SAIT health services will be offering flu vaccines starting from Oct. 21,\u201d Dr. Beavan Talukdar said in an interview.<\/p>\n<p>Talukdar, who is a part of SAIT health services, urged students to get their flu vaccines for this year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFlu vaccines are free for all individuals because it is a matter of public health,\u201d said Talukdar, adding \u201cthere will be free vaccines available at local pharmacies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to Eastern Health, the flu vaccine protects against four strains of the virus, including H1N1 influenza (swine flu).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe trends of the virus slowly changes over time. (Photo by Maiya Ahmed\/The Press)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t have to take a vaccine this year because of the mandatory vaccine we got last year,\u201d said Eiscoi. \u201cBut, I do agree that people should get vaccines every year.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The flu is mainly an influenza virus, typically type A and B. It is most commonly spread by fomites (bacteria) that are essentially spread through the sharing drinks, toothbrushes and potentially contaminated surfaces.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Medications such as Ibuprofen, acetaminophen help with aches and keeping the fever in control. &#8211; Dr. Beavan Talukdar<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Common symptoms of flu are muscle pain, fatigue, runny nose, and cough. If symptoms persist seek professional medical help.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMedications such as Ibuprofen, acetaminophen help with aches and keeping the fever in control,\u201d said Talukdar. \u201cGood hydration is also key.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ibuprofen and acetaminophen are medications typically used to treat pain or fever.
