[dropcap]M[\/dropcap]en have started growing out their facial hair to show support for the Movember<\/a><\/em> movement but some believe it\u2019s now just a fad.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere are so many men growing mustaches, just for the sake of it,” said David Morales, a peer support worker at the Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA) Calgary<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s just become a fad.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Movember<\/em> movement focuses on raising awareness and funds for prostate and testicular cancer research, and other projects that support men\u2019s health.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere are a lot of other movements that enable people to take certain steps towards what their cause is whereas Movember doesn\u2019t have any of that,\u201d Morales said in a recent interview<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s just commercializing masculinity.<\/p>\n

\u201cI do applaud them for gathering money and putting it towards prostate cancer research but, there is way more that they could be doing,\u201d Morales said.<\/p>\n

The Movember<\/em><\/a> website says that the campaign is \u201cthe leading charity changing the face of men\u2019s health.\u201d<\/p>\n

They also claim to know \u201cwhat works for men and what doesn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI didn\u2019t even know there was a movement for prostate cancer before my friends told me,\u201d said Artur de Sousa, a petroleum engineering technology student at SAIT.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m new to this movement and others should know about it too.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sousa, along with his friends, is growing out his beard to show his support for the Movember<\/em> campaign.<\/p>\n

\u201cI knew women had various movements but never heard about one for men,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Ali Nizami, a business analyst at Telus<\/a>, and his colleagues have previously collaborated to fund-raise for the Movember<\/em> campaign.<\/p>\n

“We’ve had our team page on the Movember<\/em> website and all of us drove our efforts for that one team page,\u201d said Nizami.<\/p>\n

“We did some baked goods’ sales, sold tickets for a raffle draw to win a big prize like an iPad and more such activities.”<\/p>\n

Though Nizami has never been tested for prostate cancer himself, he says it\u2019s only because the opportunity never presented itself.<\/p>\n

\u201cI never gave it much thought, even after doing fund-raising for it,\u201d said Nizami.<\/p>\n

\u201cMen see themselves as tough and they have that \u2018I don\u2019t need that\u2019 attitude.\u201d<\/p>\n

There is a need for the organization to inform men on the importance of being tested for prostate cancer after the age of 35.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe problem is that men aren\u2019t going in early enough to get tested,\u201d said Morales.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s time to have a decent conversation about this.\u201d<\/p>\n

The campaign should revolve around motivating men to go have a physical examination and do more than just growing a mustache.<\/p>\n

\u201cBecause that\u2019s how you\u2019re going to prevent prostate or testicular cancer, is by getting tested,\u201d said Morales.<\/p>\n
