(Photo by Lou De Asis\/The Press)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span class=\"wpsdc-drop-cap\">C<\/span>algary city council has unanimously voted in principle to ban the controversial practice of conversion therapy.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"wpsdc-drop-cap\">C<\/span>onversion therapy, the practice of trying to change an individual&#8217;s sexual orientation from homosexual or bisexual to heterosexual using psychological or spiritual interventions, has already been banned in other Canadian cities including Vancouver, Edmonton, and St. Albert.<\/p>\n<p>The ban resolution passed in a 14-0 vote on Feb. 3. at the Municipal Building.<\/p>\n<p>A group of more than 100 supporters were present in the council chamber for the vote.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/pub-calgary.escribemeetings.com\/filestream.ashx?DocumentId=120861\">notice of motion<\/a> was brought forward by Coun. Evan Woolley on Jan. 14 and was co-sponsored by Coun. (Photo by Lou De Asis\/The Press)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>During the meeting, councillors voiced their opposition to the practise.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cForcing anyone to do conversion therapy is a barbaric practise,\u201d said Coun. Sean Chu.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s absolutely no place for conversion therapy anywhere in any city,\u201d Gondek said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLet\u2019s just get this done.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Coun. Evan Woolley<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Although the vote was just a first step to a bylaw, Rocker said it was worth it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a symbol, but a symbol stands for something.
