(Photo by Devin Gaynor\/SAIT)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span class=\"wpsdc-drop-cap\">I<\/span>magine spending significant time and money on a post-secondary education, but not being able to secure the awaited reward of walking the stage in front of your friends and family.<\/p>\n<p>Cosmetology student Breanna Nardelli was thrust into this very situation on Oct. 17, after graduating her program at MC College in Calgary.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was a very last-minute idea despite being months after the class\u2019s graduation date,\u201d Nardelli said.<\/p>\n<p>The graduation was hosted on a Zoom call for friends and family to watch their loved ones receive their diplomas.<\/p>\n<p>Nardelli said that the ceremony only showed the graduates simply walk up to receive their certificate, and then walk down again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNeither the admin or director knew what to do,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey didn\u2019t even tell us what to expect until two minutes before the names started being called.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI really didn\u2019t like the situation at all,\u201d she remarked. \u201cI wish it had been better planned, especially since we all worked hard to get this moment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nardelli said that one of the worst parts was that she couldn\u2019t see her family while she stepped onto stage for her brief moment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe paid $100 for such a lame moment, and we didn\u2019t even get our cap and gown until a minute or two before the ceremony,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Due to this, she has no photos to celebrate the ceremony at all, except for a single blurry screenshot that her mother took as she walked onto the stage.<\/p>\n<p>Not only was the ceremony disappointing, she also said that it was one of the most awkward situations she\u2019s ever been involved in.<\/p>\n<p>One of the upsides however, was that you could at least text your family during the ceremony, but only while you were waiting for your name to be called.<\/p>\n<p>Nardelli\u2019s boyfriend Jordan Sawatzky said he was &#8220;very disappointed in the event as a whole.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He said he was expecting more for Nardelli, and that he felt it wasn\u2019t fair for her after seeing the amount of work she put into her classes during the course of the year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis whole COVID thing is really putting a strain on every aspect of our lives,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_58151\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-58151\" style=\"width: 1437px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-58151\" src=\"http:\/\/saitjournalism.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/20201104-Story-3-DG-021-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1437\" height=\"2560\" srcset=\"https:\/\/saitjournalism.ca\/thepress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/20201104-Story-3-DG-021-scaled.jpg 1437w, https:\/\/saitjournalism.ca\/thepress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/20201104-Story-3-DG-021-168x300.jpg 168w, https:\/\/saitjournalism.ca\/thepress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/20201104-Story-3-DG-021-575x1024.jpg 575w, https:\/\/saitjournalism.ca\/thepress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/20201104-Story-3-DG-021-768x1368.jpg 768w, https:\/\/saitjournalism.ca\/thepress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/20201104-Story-3-DG-021-862x1536.jpg 862w, https:\/\/saitjournalism.ca\/thepress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/20201104-Story-3-DG-021-1150x2048.jpg 1150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1437px) 100vw, 1437px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-58151\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><strong>Celebrate grad:<\/strong> Breanna Nardelli at home on Nov. 4, after graduating from the cosmetology program at MC College.
