{"id":62266,"date":"2021-07-29T09:41:30","date_gmt":"2021-07-29T15:41:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/saitjournalism.ca\/?p=62266"},"modified":"2021-07-29T09:41:30","modified_gmt":"2021-07-29T15:41:30","slug":"calgarians-divided-over-governments-covid-19-vaccine-lottery-spending","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/saitjournalism.ca\/thepress\/2021\/07\/29\/calgarians-divided-over-governments-covid-19-vaccine-lottery-spending\/","title":{"rendered":"Calgarians divided over government\u2019s COVID-19 vaccine lottery spending"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"wpsdc-drop-cap\">A<\/span>lberta\u2019s workforce\u2019s best shot at getting help from the government is the COVID-19 vaccine.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"wpsdc-drop-cap\">T<\/span>hat\u2019s the implicit message the Kenney government is sending to Albertans with its vaccine lottery, according to some frustrated business owners.<\/p>\n<p>Juandre Van Den Berg is the assistant manager at State and Main Kitchen and Bar. He says many people within the service industry were hit hard during the lockdowns and had little or no help from the government.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf they&#8217;re willing to spend that much money for people to win for people to win prizes, I feel like the government could have done something better,\u201d said Van Den Berg.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c(They could\u2019ve) put that money towards people who have not received any compensation at all.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Throughout the pandemic, the Kenney government has been scrutinized for how they managed money during a time when businesses had to shut down.<\/p>\n<p>According to Alberta Health, the \u201cCOVID Loves\u201d ads, infamously dubbed \u201cUncle COVID,\u201d had a total budget of $2.5 million.<\/p>\n<p>The vaccine lottery has three $1-million draws, as well an extensive list of other prizes including plane tickets, sporting event tickets, vacation packages, and Stampede passes. (Photo by Omar Sherif\/The Press)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019re keeping statistics on how many people are getting the vaccine,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you could show that once a lottery was announced that statistically there was a reasonable increase in demand for first and second doses, that&#8217;s maybe an indication on how effective the lottery was.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Since the launch of the lottery, more than 70 per cent of Albertans have been vaccinated with at least one dose. But businesses are still suffering.
