Renting complex’s and such see a small decline, as more and more Calgarians are choosing to buy properties.

As of 2019, smaller communities such as Cornerstone, Nolan Hill, Redstone, Mahogany, and more are seeing their population rise. With more of the population choosing to build their houses in these newer areas around Calgary. Leaving behind their older houses for the sleek architecture in these newer communities.

Jaspreet Sekhon, a member of the Applewood community, now building a new house in Cornerstone, a community on the north side of Calgary.

“You can see what you want, don’t have to stick with what people already have. Design it however you want, and it is all new land, so no worrying about sewer problems or anything,” said Sekhon.

“We can really see how many people choose to move to Canada and start their families here, which is always great, but that also means we have to expand on our schools, and other similar facilities,” said Mehtab Singh, an accounting student

Calgarians are choosing to move out to urban centres and shifting to the larger communities that are open for building. With high demands coming for land plots, to fill new areas with modern architecture to fulfil the needs of Canadians.

“Just having new land, and starting fresh, and not going somewhere reused or occupied, we were living in the south and thought lets up towards the north side,” said Sekhon.

“It really is interesting to see all these people going straight towards these new areas, and skipping out on buying an older house, it comes down to money if you have the money then why not put it towards a larger investment, that will be beneficial for you now and later on in the future,” said Singh.

With more and more immigrants coming to Canada, the demand is increasing for home construction. The affordability that comes with building houses is an enormous factor in those wanting to build rather than buy. Older houses in Calgary are thought to be not well designed for the larger families that are over moving to Calgary. The land plots sell fast in the summer for Canadians and immigrants who are looking to reside in Calgary.

It really is interesting to see all these people going straight towards these new areas, and skipping out on buying an older house, it comes down to money if you have the money then why not put it towards a larger investment, that will be beneficial for you now and later on in the future.- Singh

“Our contractor said it should be done by early spring, but you know there are always delays in construction, but hopefully spring we can move in. And it’s a new land, so they’re doing it pretty fast,” said Sekhon.

With these newer neighbourhoods, Calgarians can really see large differences compared to the older neighbouring communities. They are made to be affordable for average families. Solution wise there is not a specific one. If Calgary is expecting its population to keep going up at the steady rate it is going at now, then adding smaller neighbouring communities is the best approach. Creating affordable housing along Calgary and expanding on schooling to better improve the lives of Calgarians.

In Calgary, the neighbourhoods are easily about 50 to 70 years old. With new architecture coming out, that is now better, and more improved compared to the past it is getting more and more popular to construct. Calgary’s population has heavily gained an increase, for being an affordable city to live in, compared to neighbouring cities such as Toronto, and such.

Alberta’s population is now seeing a significant increase in their communities, creating high demands for housing. As the numbers seem to expand in the newer communities that are being built around Calgary.
