{"id":64467,"date":"2022-02-08T16:41:13","date_gmt":"2022-02-08T23:41:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/saitjournalism.ca\/?p=64467"},"modified":"2022-02-08T16:41:13","modified_gmt":"2022-02-08T23:41:13","slug":"the-city-of-calgary-launches-new-heritage-map","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/saitjournalism.ca\/thepress\/2022\/02\/08\/the-city-of-calgary-launches-new-heritage-map\/","title":{"rendered":"The City of Calgary launches new Heritage map"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_64471\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-64471\" style=\"width: 1179px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-64471\" src=\"http:\/\/saitjournalism.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/Screen-Shot-2022-01-24-at-4.28.52-PM.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1179\" height=\"533\" srcset=\"https:\/\/saitjournalism.ca\/thepress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/Screen-Shot-2022-01-24-at-4.28.52-PM.png 1179w, https:\/\/saitjournalism.ca\/thepress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/Screen-Shot-2022-01-24-at-4.28.52-PM-300x136.png 300w, https:\/\/saitjournalism.ca\/thepress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/Screen-Shot-2022-01-24-at-4.28.52-PM-1024x463.png 1024w, https:\/\/saitjournalism.ca\/thepress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/Screen-Shot-2022-01-24-at-4.28.52-PM-768x347.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1179px) 100vw, 1179px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-64471\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The City of Calgary and Heritage Calgary partnered up to launch an inventory of Calgary&#8217;s history.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span class=\"wpsdc-drop-cap\">T<\/span>he City of Calgary teamed up with Heritage Calgary to create the new and improved version of the city\u2019s heritage map, which launched on Jan. 17.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"wpsdc-drop-cap\">T<\/span>his tool, called the Inventory of Evaluated Historic Resources, provides information of more than 800 historic sites in Calgary and is a combination of the previously available Heritage Inventory and the Discover Historic Calgary map.<\/p>\n<p>Josh Traptow, the CEO of Heritage Calgary, said that this inventory is one of Calgary\u2019s worst-kept secrets.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOftentimes, people say Calgary doesn&#8217;t have any history because it\u2019s such a young city, but we do have a significant number of heritage sites in our city and we need to celebrate them,\u201d Traptow said.<\/p>\n<p>This interactive map is mobile-friendly, includes improved search and download capabilities, has aerial photos of different time-periods to see the changes over time, as well as visual accessibility for people with colour-blindness, according to The City of Calgary\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.calgary.ca\/whats-old-becomes-new-again-heritage-inventory-map-gets-a-refresh\/\">press release<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was an easy decision for the team to make it as accessible as possible,\u201d Traptow said.<\/p>\n<p>Harry Sanders, an Alberta-based historian and freelance writer, said this is a useful tool for people who work in history and heritage, as well as the general public, because information is readily available.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople can quickly and easily get an interesting narrative about a place and a sophisticated visual appreciation of it through archival photographs and this mapping feature,\u201d Sanders said.<\/p>\n<p>Sanders said this resource is valuable to people who want to learn about their home, campus, work, or a certain building.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s a past to all of that.
