Along the west side of the park sits the Bonavista Downs community hall; hidden in its shadow the Bonavista Downs do-it-yourself skatepark.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Through the assorted grass and courts, there is a sign on a fence \u2014 use of safety equipment highly recommended, no drugs or alcohol, USE AT YOUR OWN RISK.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Scribbled in the margins, <em>bye Marcel.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It&#8217;s nearly 1 p.m. on a Thursday in June, and a kid, maybe ten years old, is helmet-clad and pumping his way up and down the park\u2019s largest of three half-pipes. He says he\u2019s homeschooled and on his lunch break. He mentions Marcel, and how he was the driving factor in developing the park.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Marcel had started a GoFundMe for the park in 2019 and he started to seem like he was a guy worth talking to.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jeremiah Morrison agreed.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Morrison currently serves as the vice-president for the Bonavista Downs Community Association (BDCA) and was president during Marcel\u2019s reign as \u201cThe Guy\u201d.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c[Marcel] was my contact,\u201d said Morrison, \u201cHe would tell me what the skateboarders were after, or issues they were having, or whatever.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhenever we would do a build day, he would ensure that all of his friends and the other skateboarders came out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Everything in the skatepark stems from volunteer efforts. The BDCA hosts \u201cbuild days\u201d where members of the community come together to help modify the park and its features. Henley joked that most of the features were built by kid\u2019s dads.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While there is certainly some truth to that, the Bonavista Downs skatepark has also received much support from external organizations.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to Morrison, they have received support from <a href=\"https:\/\/theinside.ca\/\">The Inside<\/a>, a faith-based skateboarding organization; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newlineskateparks.com\/\">New Line Skateparks<\/a>, who donated the parks half-pipes; and<a href=\"https:\/\/www.knightcustomhomes.ca\"> Knight Custom Homes<\/a> whose staff often volunteers on build days.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As well, the Bonavista Downs D.I.Y. received funds through the <a href=\"https:\/\/activateyyc.calgarycommunities.com\/\">Activate YYC<\/a> grant program \u2014 an organization that describes itself as a \u201ctactical urbanism microgrant initiative\u201d and is run by the <a href=\"https:\/\/calgarycommunities.com\/\">Federation of Calgary Communities.<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This year the park is also receiving donations from the Calgary Parking Authority, which may be a bit of solace for skateboarders with a certain talent for racking up parking tickets.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It may also warm the heart of Marcel, who is no longer in Calgary to witness the outpouring of support.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_66911\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-66911\" style=\"width: 150px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-66911 size-thumbnail\" src=\"http:\/\/saitjournalism.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/20220615-S2-Bonavista-D.I.Y.-PL-10-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-66911\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><strong>Dialed in:\u00a0<\/strong>Marcel Jimenez on a video call from a Toronto skatepark.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Marcel Jimenez now lives in Toronto, Ontario.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whilst in Calgary, Jimenez worked as a camp counsellor for Riders on Board, coordinated efforts to build up the Bonavista Downs D.I.Y., and organized the aforementioned GoFundMe.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe ended up raising about 250 bucks and I put that into building the mani pad and a little down-ledge that used to be there, but it ended up getting fully destroyed,\u201d said Jimenez.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe people that come in are from all sports, like scooters or skateboards or BMX, a lot of this stuff isn&#8217;t built for that wide variety.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although many credit Jimenez for his work with the park, it preceded him by quite a while. According to Jimenez himself, the D.I.Y. park has existed in different iterations for at least 14 years.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When Jimenez first found the park with the help of local skater and childhood friend <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/baldattitude\/\">Jackson Sluiter<\/a>, it was an assortment of small, odd features \u2014 including a teeter-totter-esque rail that Jimenez named \u201cthe craziest thing ever\u201d.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe would skate from our houses [up the hill], and then bomb the hill every day,\u201d said Jimenez, \u201cand then there&#8217;s the church on the right side of the road when you come down that has a stair over a four-block, and a little mani pad outside the back and then there&#8217;s also a little gap [jump].\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYou go up all of the aspects of skating on the way to this park every day. Everybody would be like, oh, why don&#8217;t you come skate Swood [a.k.a.
