(Photo by Pamela Shah\/The Press)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\"><span class=\"wpsdc-drop-cap\">M<\/span>ourning Calgarians gathered at City Hall to watch a live broadcast of Queen Elizabeth II funeral and sign a book of condolences.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">The funeral took place in the Windsor Castle chapel on Sept. 19, which followed a procession of the queen\u2019s coffin around the United Kingdom. Her Majesty was then set to rest next to her late father in the chapel.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Calgarians had the opportunity to write messages to the queen in a book of condolences.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">City Council members Richard Pootmans, Sonya Sharp, Terry Wong, and Andre Chabot were present and participated in a moment of silence. This was proceeded by a rendition of God Save the Queen, and then God Save the King in honour of the new King Charles III. <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201cAs a human, as a daughter, as a mother, it\u2019s an emotional day,\u201d said Ward 1 Coun. Sonya Sharp.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201cAs a Canadian, you walk into so many buildings, and you see her portrait. In my generation, I learned a lot about the monarchy and the Queen\u2019s position in school, so for me, this has come full circle in understanding everything, and now, seeing a new sovereign.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Another attendee was Corrie Rehioo, a British veteran who served in the Second Royal Tank Regiment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201cThe Queen, to me, is a unifier,\u201d said Rehioo. \u201cHaving a monarchy\u2014 it shows that you\u2019ve got respect, understanding, and have a bond with the people who live [in commonwealth countries].\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Rehioo is a British-Canadian dual citizen who was born in Essex, a county northeast of London, and now resides in Calgary. After serving in Iraq and Afghanistan, he met the Queen at Buckingham Palace in 2008 when he marched in a Trooping of the Colour ceremony.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201cHonouring the guys, the guys we lost on tour, or the guys that were injured\u2014 it felt good. It was good recognition.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span data-contrast=\"none\">As a human, as a daughter, as a mother, it\u2019s an emotional day. \u2014 Sonya Sharp<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">While there were many who were mourning Queen Elizabeth, there were others who felt differently.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201cShe\u2019s not the queen of me,\u201d said Johnny Youngblood, of the Athabasca Chipewyan First Nation. <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201cI\u2019m Canadian, not British. I feel for them, she was the leader of their country, but she\u2019s just a monarch. She\u2019s on your dime, on your quarter. I have no feelings about her; it\u2019s something for the white people.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Youngblood\u2019s mother suffered emotional and physical trauma from residential schools.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201c[The queen] didn\u2019t do anything for our people.
