C<\/span>ornelia Wiebe, a candidate for the Calgary Elbow UCP nomination, met with locals at the Blanco Cantina on Nov. 23.<\/p>\n

R<\/span>esidents raised concerns about homelessness and drug use, and housing.<\/p>\n

\u201cDefinitely the economy, so whether we’re talking about jobs, we’re talking about inflation, cost of living \u2014 like those things are front of mind, I think for everyone,” said Wiebe. \u201cHealth care is also a priority. I mean, we are we’re in a critical place in our province and certainly across the country.<\/p>\n

“We’re not alone in our health-care crisis, but we, as a province have to solve that problem, right? For our residents\u201d<\/p>\n

Robert Mathewson, a Calgary Elbow resident, explained his concerns with housing density.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou want more housing, you have to get the people who are going to build it able to do it fast,” he said. “So that’s been a big thing in Canada (to) fully embrace. We’re going to need more housing.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have less housing per-capita and most of the OECD countries, which is ridiculous. We have the space. We have the riches to do it. And because we have a shortage, we end up with higher rent and higher house prices.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNothing happens by accident. In politics, it’s always somebody who’s had a better ground game\u201d said Rick Orman, a former Minister of Labour, and the MLA for the Calgary Montrose district. \u201cWhen people say, `Well, what’s your opinion about this?’ The answer really is, `Well, look, everybody has opinions. But my job is an MLA is actually to canvass everybody’s opinion. And then take that to the caucus.'”<\/p>\n

Calgary Elbow is a district in the centre of the city that has been unrepresented after the previous MLA, Doug Schweitzer, stepped down in August of 2022<\/a>. Wiebe is running to become the UCP candidate for Calgary Elbow, although the electoral future for the district is uncertain. In October, Samir Kayande, the NDP nominee for Calgary Elbow, called for a byelection<\/a> to fill the vacancy.<\/p>\n

Wiebe previously ran in the 2021 municipal election for ward eight, finishing in fifth place<\/a> with 10 per cent of the vote.<\/p>\n
