(Photo by Pamela Shah\/The Press)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><span class=\"wpsdc-drop-cap\">C<\/span>algarians showed great fanaticism for Canada\u2019s spot in the FIFA World Cup, and their excitement bled into skyrocketing attendance at pubs that were willing to open early.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Canada\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.business-standard.com\/article\/sports\/fifa-world-cup-after-36-years-canada-has-to-wait-longer-for-world-cup-win-122112400193_1.html\">first appearance in the World Cup in 36 years<\/a> sparked so much excitement that local pubs have struggled to accommodate fans. Jamesons Irish Pub was fully booked by the time Canada played their second game.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWe still had people coming down and we just had to turn them away. We had nowhere for them to sit,\u201d said Mike Roy, manager of Jamesons\u2019 location in Brentwood.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Jameson staff announced that they would open their doors at 8 a.m. to accommodate customers who wished to view Canada\u2019s game against Croatia at 9 a.m.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The passion to cheer for Canada was so widespread that many, like Roy, struggled to find a Canada\u2019s FIFA jersey in stores.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cI didn\u2019t want to wear my hockey jersey, because that\u2019s not quite right, in my opinion, but when I got to work, that\u2019s literally all you saw,\u201d said Roy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Whether it was hockey jerseys, or simply jerseys that were red and white, fans were eager to show their support for Canada. This was the case for Brennan O\u2019Yeung, a visitor to Jamesons who wore a red and white English Premier League jersey.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cIt\u2019s really great to see Canada have representation on the world stage and it gives me hope for a lot of other sports that have grassroots in Canada,\u201d said O\u2019Yeung, a badminton player and a business graduate from the University of Calgary.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Other bars in Calgary welcomed early-bird guests during the World Cup. <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Ship_and_Anchor\/status\/1596555742085287937?s=20&amp;t=WgyQjeT6cCIiMP4ocg1kUw\">The Ship &amp; Anchor bar on 17th Ave,<\/a> and Bottlescrew Bill\u2019s on 10th Ave S.W., opened at 8:30 a.m. to accommodate guests eager to watch Canada\u2019s match against Croatia.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The heightened fervor to watch Canada\u2019s games was short lived. While many were excited for this unprecedented event, the roots of passion for this sport are still green in Canada.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cIt\u2019s a different story in Europe. It\u2019s all about your game. It\u2019s all about your team. Soccer is life,\u201d said Roy. <\/span><span class=\"s1\">\u201cIt\u2019s definitely ingrained in [European] communities a lot more, and so, they\u2019ll come out and support their team even when they\u2019re down or potentially about to go out. Whereas, unfortunately, we didn\u2019t see that with Canada.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">When Canada\u2019s chances of advancing passed the group stages plummeted, business at these pubs diminished drastically. According to Roy, Canada\u2019s third World Cup game saw more staff in attendance than guests.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span class=\"s1\">It\u2019s really great to see Canada have representation on the world stage and it gives me hope for a lot of other sports that have grassroots in Canada. -O\u2019Yeung.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The World Cup games are being hosted in Doha, Qatar, which is 10 time zones ahead of Alberta.
