(Photo by Celestia Nlemvo\/The Press)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span class=\"wpsdc-drop-cap\">A<\/span>t the age of 54, a former postsecondary student who graduated decades ago, is still finding it difficult to pay his school loans.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Michael Johnston was 23 years old when he enrolled at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ualberta.ca\/graduate-programs\/business.html\">University of Alberta<\/a> to pursue a bachelor&#8217;s degree in business. He had always envisioned himself one day running his own small business.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"wpsdc-drop-cap\">L<\/span>ike many students in Alberta, Johnston knew he couldn&#8217;t afford to pay for his tuition, so he took more than $39,020 year in student loans from the federal and provincial governments to pursue a post-secondary education.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Johnston decided to move out of his parents&#8217; home and find his own apartment, which included having to pay for items such as rent, groceries, and utilities, all out of his own pocket. Overtime, Johnston learned how to save his money by splitting his weekly earnings between his needs and the loans\u2014at least until unfortunate events altered his circumstances. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIn terms of the government, they don&#8217;t just give you money for nothing; they do so with the expectation that you will repay them in full,&#8221; he says. \u201cKeeping that in mind, I realized I needed to increase my efforts to make sure I would have enough money to repay them when the time came.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An annual loan cap of $8,500 per semester is imposed on the 75 per cent of Canadian students supported by the combined efforts of the Canadian and Alberta governments according to<a href=\"https:\/\/studentaid.alberta.ca\/student-aid-funding-guide\/loans-and-grants-funding-guide\/about-loans-and-grants\/loans-and-grants-details\/\"> Alberta Student Aid.<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Despite this cap, however, many students continue to accumulate significant debt.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Johnston received the best news of his life while still in school.
