(Photo by Abhilakshdeep Singh\/The Press)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span class=\"wpsdc-drop-cap\">C<\/span>algary saw a large number of people migrating from all over the world this year in search of a better life.<\/p>\n<p>The city <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/calgary\/calgary-newcomers-programs-demand-population-projection-1.6816845\">estimates<\/a> the population will grow by 62 new residents a day for the next several years, which could mean 110,000 more people arriving by 2027.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlberta&#8217;s strong interprovincial migration flows continue,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/trevortombe\/status\/1707020507365970190\">read a tweet<\/a> Trevor Tombe, a University of Calgary economist. \u201cNearly 14K net inflows within the second quarter of 2023 alone.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/politics\/sean-fraser-immigration-numbers-1.6712766\">Last year<\/a>, the federal Liberal government announced a new immigration plan that would see Canada welcome 500,000 immigrants per year by 2025.<\/p>\n<p>Tombe noted that the inflow was dominated by young people in their 20s and 30s.<\/p>\n<p>Despite its high costs, students continue consider Calgary to be a better option than other North American cities.<\/p>\n<p>The price for rent in Calgary, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/business\/rentals-ca-urbanation-september-1.6995438\">CBC<\/a>, in September was $2,149 \u2014 up by more than 11 per cent compared with a year ago.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn my opinion, Calgary is the best option to live even though it\u2019s becoming crowded,\u201d said SAIT student Usama Javed, who migrated from Pakistan last year. \u201cIt is still way affordable than other Canadian cities like Toronto and Vancouver, which is the reason people are still migrating immensely.<\/p>\n<p>According to Statistics Canada, approximately 74,000 B.C. and Ontario residents <a href=\"https:\/\/www150.statcan.gc.ca\/t1\/tbl1\/en\/tv.action?pid=1710002201&amp;pickMembers%5B0%5D=1.10&amp;cubeTimeFrame.startYear=2018+%2F+2019&amp;cubeTimeFrame.endYear=2022+%2F+2023&amp;referencePeriods=20180101%2C20220101\">moved to Alberta<\/a>\u00a0last year.<\/p>\n<p>One of the Saitsa board of directors and civil engineering technology student, Gurnoor Singh Brar, shared his views.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;My brother recommended me about SAIT and told that Calgary would be what you are looking for to have a bright future with all the job opportunities and peaceful environment,&#8221; said Brar.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_71655\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-71655\" style=\"width: 331px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-71655\" src=\"http:\/\/saitjournalism.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/20231002-MIGRATION-CALGARY-2-AS-057-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"331\" height=\"219\" srcset=\"https:\/\/saitjournalism.ca\/thepress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/20231002-MIGRATION-CALGARY-2-AS-057-scaled.jpg 2560w, https:\/\/saitjournalism.ca\/thepress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/20231002-MIGRATION-CALGARY-2-AS-057-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/saitjournalism.ca\/thepress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/20231002-MIGRATION-CALGARY-2-AS-057-1024x678.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/saitjournalism.ca\/thepress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/20231002-MIGRATION-CALGARY-2-AS-057-768x509.jpg 768w, https:\/\/saitjournalism.ca\/thepress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/20231002-MIGRATION-CALGARY-2-AS-057-1536x1017.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/saitjournalism.ca\/thepress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/20231002-MIGRATION-CALGARY-2-AS-057-2048x1356.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 331px) 100vw, 331px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-71655\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><strong>NEW OPPORTUNITIES<\/strong>: Gurnoor Singh Brar works on his assignments at Heritage Hall. (Graph by Abhilakshdeep Singh\/The Press)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cMy parents immigrated from Italy in 1920s with their families to New York as there was no way out due to severe poverty,\u201d said Nick, a Calgarian moved from U.S. in the year 1999 . \u201cI believe it is the same situation for people coming to Calgary because of the reputation the city has built in terms of low interest-rates, affordable housing, and more job opportunities.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWell Calgary is a nice city to live, relatively clean as compared to others, fairly peaceful, particularly than New York City for sure,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Others believe that migration from all over the world reduces affordability and leads to housing difficulties.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;At the rate at which people are migrating to Calgary from everywhere else, I am afraid that Calgarians will face severe housing crises soon,&#8221; said Joyce, a Calgarian who migrated to the city from Manitoba 40 years ago.<\/p>\n<p>Blake Shaffer, an assistant economics professor at the University of Calgary, provided an analysis of Alberta&#8217;s population change since 1971.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;At the rate at which people are migrating to Calgary from everywhere else, I am afraid that Calgarians will face severe housing crises soon,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>Calgary&#8217;s opportunities for employment and equality attracts people from all over the world. SAIT student Deniel Boachie Manu \u2014 originally from Ghana \u2014 moved from Montreal to Calgary to start fresh.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDevelopment and equal opportunity are what I love about Calgary,\u201d said Boachie Manu. &#8220;If you are here [in Calgary], you\u2019ll still make it even though you are not smart.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Some people prefer the environment and lifestyle of a city.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think people of Calgary are very friendly and make others feel welcomed,\u201d said SAIT student Teresa Lian. \u201cI went all across from Toronto to Vancouver but finally chose to stay in Calgary.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Everybody has their own reasons to move to a new place.
