(Photo by Laura Horvat\/The Press)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span class=\"wpsdc-drop-cap\">F<\/span>or nearly a decade, art therapist and counsellor Jennifer Seniuk has been helping people overcome mental health barriers through sessions of art therapy.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The therapy involves the exploration of trauma or anxiety through art. It offers an alternative to speaking directly about difficult situations.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe art is the language that we speak through,&#8221; said Seniuk.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cInstead of overwhelming them (clients) with information when they don\u2019t have the words to explain how they&#8217;re feeling, we make art.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Seniuk sees clients in-person at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vividpsychology.com\/\">Vivid Psychology &amp; Wellness,<\/a> as well as through <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bellyeyearttherapy.com\/\">Belly Eye Art Therapy,<\/a> which she founded in 2021. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Art therapy sessions are open for teens, adults, and children. Seniuk offers her sessions in groups and regularly accepts invitations to events and retreats. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even if there are language barriers, clients are often able to find common ground with Seniuk using art.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt does not matter what demographic you are or where you live,\u201d she Seniuk. \u201cThe arts are a mutual ground. That way, we can communicate with one another.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As well as painting or drawing, Seniuk offers activities such as using playdough or breaking paper to help clients express anger. No prior art skills are required in order to attend art therapy. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The creations are only examined by Seniuk if they hold a deeper meaning.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cPeople think I am secretly judging them, but I am not,\u201d she said. \u201cThere are just things that I am keeping as information.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Seniuk also records <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bellyeyearttherapy.com\/art-therapy-is-podcast\/ou0srz3r5nr8z5pjl8xat8suih5y64-pl9r3-s5ftl-wd9fm-g6f8h-2nxff-mt2gy-dtwlt-wwegr-b5gkd-24p7e-rcnpp\">podcasts<\/a> that are available on Spotify, YouTube, Apple Podcasts and Google Podcasts. This provides an option for clients who are unable to show up in-person for appointments.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Seniuk assists individuals who are hesitant to engage in art for different reasons.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSo we talk about that,\u201d she said. \u201cWhy is there resistance? Do you notice resistance in any other area of your life? How do you navigate that when you&#8217;re feeling resistance?&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Is it fear? Is there shame coming up? Is there something else going on?\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Art therapy was not Seniuk\u2019s first choice of career. While studying to become a high school teacher at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ulethbridge.ca\/?gclid=CjwKCAiAmZGrBhAnEiwAo9qHiVArbHIXgljyKMadxmvS2o3_244Ps-OlTQXFivp86bk7fCErRvkAIxoCYO8QAvD_BwE\">University of Lethbridge<\/a>, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Seniuk took art therapy in order to boost her GPA. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI was like, &#8216;I&#8217;m good at art. That&#8217;d be great,&#8217;\u201d Seniuk said. \u201cI can easily boost my grades with that and it changed my life forever.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Seniuk finished her studies in the U.S. and became a licensed art therapist. After returning to Calgary, she founded Belly Eye Art in 2021.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI think that art therapy should get more recognition because it helps people in a way that I never thought was possible,\u201d said client Branden Vicencio.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Art therapy is a newer profession that not many people know of.
