C<\/span>ALGARY – As SAIT<\/span> continues to enforce its smoke-free polic<\/span>y, some students are finding ways to cope with the challenge of not <\/span>lighting up <\/span>on campus. <\/span><\/span>According to SAIT’s website, it became a smoke-free campus in <\/span>f<\/span>all of 2020.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>
\n<\/strong><\/p>\n

The policy prohibits smoking of any kind – <\/span><\/span>including tobacco and cannabis, a<\/span>long with <\/span>vaping – on<\/span> SAIT property<\/span>.<\/span> It was implemented to support the long-term health and well-being of the SAIT community and to reduce fire hazards, litter, and maintenance costs.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

However, many students and faculty can still be seen smoking on campus.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Enforcement through ticketing will be the \u201clast tool used by SAIT\u2019s community peace officers,\u201d read an online post. <\/span>\u00a0The SAIT<\/span> website also offers resources to students who want to get over nicotine and smoking cravings.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

However, for some students who smoke, the policy poses a challenge, especially during stressful times such as exams or assignments.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

One student, who asked to remain anonymous, said she smokes because she is used to it, and it helps her relax.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>She has been smoking since living in India and can\u2019t control the urge of it. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cFor me, I personally don\u2019t have any problem with smoking on campus as long as I am not giving anyone trouble because I am aware some people have breathing problems or simply don\u2019t like the smell of tobacco,\u201d she said.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Other students say the policy is not being followed or enforced, and they often encounter people smoking around campus, especially near the entrances and exits of buildings. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Jelyne Santos, a first-year business administration student says she hates the smell of cigarettes and covers her nose when she walks by the smoking zone<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWhen I arrive at school, I see a lot of students smoking in that area, and I see a bunch of cigarette butts on the floor.\u201d she said.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Uddamveer Singh, a second-year journalism student, says he does not smoke, and has not had any interaction with smokers at SAIT. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Singh said he knows that SAIT is a smoke-free campus, and he regularly sees the sign outside the northern entrance that says so.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>He said he is not aware of any other policies on smoking at SAIT, but he has a suggestion for the administration.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>“Smoking zones should be made for smokers,\u201d said Singh.\u00a0 <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI know some people that smoke, and I also acknowledge their urge to smoke.\u201d\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
