(Photo by Meghan Lett\/The Press)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On top of SAIT\u2019s culinary building, a hive of bees passes the winter insulated by honey and an insulated \u2018sleeping bag\u2019.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The hive has been winterized and \u201cput to sleep\u201d by the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/saitbeekeeping\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">beekeeping club<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2014 but they\u2019re not actually sleeping.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBees don&#8217;t hibernate the way bears do,\u201d said Kate Symes, a faculty advisor for the club.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The bees stay awake to keep their queen alive through winter. In the fall, they drop the population size just enough to keep her buzzing. They also kick out all the male bees.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is because the hive can only store so much food. The smaller population gives them enough honey for the cold, flowerless months.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And while the insulated \u201csleeping bag\u201d helps fight the chill, bees do a great job of staying toasty on their own. They huddle together and use their wings and breath to control the temperature in the hive.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But the bees aren\u2019t stuck there all season.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSometimes in the winter, you&#8217;ll have a warm chinook day, and you&#8217;ll see bees out and think: what&#8217;s happening? It&#8217;s because if it&#8217;s above four degrees, they may go out to see what&#8217;s going on,\u201d said Symes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For this reason and for airflow, the hive has a small, bee-sized hole at the bottom. Bees use this tiny doorway for warm-weather bathroom breaks.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThey&#8217;ll take what we call cleansing flights. They&#8217;re very hygienic. They don&#8217;t go to the bathroom in the hive,\u201d said Simon Dunn, another faculty advisor for the beekeepers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And as the bees stay active through the winter, so does the club.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During peak beekeeping months \u2013 generally May to late October \u2013 the club members inspect hives, harvest honey and hang out with the bees. In the winter, they stay active with activities like a honey competition, fundraising and educational seminars.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The club is open to all students, and no experience is required.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI was terrified out of my mind to work with bees,\u201d said <\/span><a href=\"mailto:ashleyjbaes@gmail.com\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ashley Baes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a former SAIT student and beekeeping club member.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBut it was such a cool experience. To be involved with where your food comes from\u2014I think that&#8217;s important for people to experience.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The switch from fear to fascination seems to be common with students.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI find a lot of people come up and they&#8217;re like: \u2018oh, I just want to watch,\u2019 &#8221; said Symes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0\u201cThen within half an hour, they&#8217;re in.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Her fellow faculty advisor offers a reason for this quick turnaround.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt&#8217;s incredibly soothing to be on the roof with a bee suit on and surrounded by bees that are humming,\u201d said Dunn.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt&#8217;s almost meditative. It&#8217;s as close as I can get to being a part of nature in the city.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And for any students thinking of keeping their own bees, the club is an opportunity to test that interest for free.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIf you wanted to have bees in Calgary, you have to take a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/calgarybeekeepers.com\/cdba-events\/learning-events\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">$300 beekeeping course<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u201d explains Paul Godard, an urban hobby beekeeper. \u201cThen you have to buy equipment. You&#8217;re looking $1,000 &#8211; $1,500 to get a hive on the ground.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Godard began beekeeping over a decade ago, when his son showed interest.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Around the same time, an organization near their home \u2013 the Veterans Association Food Bank \u2013 started up. Godard\u2019s son gave them their first donation: $50 and a jar of honey.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ever since, all their honey proceeds have gone to this organization.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt&#8217;s kind of a money-losing proposition,\u201d said Godard of his beekeeping.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But he loves it all the same.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI would sit back and crack a beer in the summer, the sun would be blazing, and occasionally bees come and land on you. You put your little plate of water out with some rocks, and they come in for their water.
