SAIT students who rely on transit will have to adjust to yet another inconvenience as work on the Victoria Park/Stampede Station will see a section of the Red Line closed in late November.

The closure will last for nine days, from Nov. 24 to Dec. 4, between City Hall/Bow Valley College and Chinook stations, as well as lane closures on northbound Macleod Trail, between 25 Avenue and 12 Avenue S.E.

Replacement shuttle services will be available during that period.

“With big, city-building projects like this one we try to avoid disruptions to Calgarians as much as we can,” said Doug Morgan, general manager of operational services in a release.

“When we can’t, we will do our best to work with you as we get through the rough spots together.”

The project, delivered by the Calgary Municipal Land Corporation (CMLC), is a part of the 17 Ave. S.E. Extension plan — aimed at making the C-Train more accessible for Calgarians.

“Building a project of this scale and significance in a constrained right-of-way – between the BMO Centre and Macleod Trail – in the heart of one of the most active destinations for entertainment and cultural programming in the city is very complex,” said Kate Thompson, president and CEO of CMLC.

To ensure the project is done within the nine days, 24-hour construction will take place at the station.

We are grateful to Calgarians for their patience and understanding — Doug Morgan

While the construction will require many transit riders to find an alternative way to commute, the City is making an effort to support them.

“We are grateful to Calgarians for their patience and understanding while we complete this important phase of work to deliver on our shared vision for a bold and vibrant Culture + Entertainment District,” said Morgan. “As a thank you, we are offering a 25 per cent discount on all monthly passes for December.”

Full details about replacement shuttle routes, traffic and pedestrian detours, and other considerations will be available in the coming weeks.

In the meantime, Calgarians can look into available transit alternatives:

  • Calgary Transit’s largest-ever replacement shuttle service operation
  • Express shuttle service between key south C-Train stations and downtown
  • Downtown parking options
  • Alternative combinations of driving and transit

Regular transit services to Victoria Park/Stampede Station will resume on the morning of Dec. 4 when the station is slated to reopen.

Additional station work will be completed through early 2024.
