Makayla Douglas is an artist and an athlete. Many might see this unique combination of interests as contrasting each other, but for her, they fit perfectly.
Growing up in Saskatchewan, her love for both activities grew. In her adult life, she discovered she could pursue both passions at a high level.
For the past two summers, Douglas has played infield, shortstop and third base for the Saskatoon Selects.
Douglas sat down with The Press to answer some questions about her school and athletic career.
What school do you go to?
Alberta University of the Arts.
What program are you taking at AU Arts?
Graphic design and advertising.
What made you get into graphic design and advertising?
I like making art, but I also wanted to make money. So I thought that was the best of two worlds.
What career are you looking to get into?
A graphic designer, maybe an art director at a company.
What sports do you play?
Currently just fastball.
How did you start playing fastball?
I played T-ball at my small-town school, because my mom played softball and wanted me to continue.
How did you start playing at SAIT even though you go to AU Arts?
Basically, I found out that any student from AU Arts could be a Trojan because they are affiliated. So I just emailed the coach and that was it.
How do you balance school, sports, and life?
Just trying to get as much school done as possible at school. If there is an option to leave class early, I usually won’t — just to get stuff done so that when I’m home, I can actually have fun, and I’m not stressed about things to be doing.
How do you handle the stress of it?
Cry. No, just laugh it off I guess and deep breaths during the game.
What are your best memories of playing?
Travelling, going to nationals and winning provincials.
