Want to get moving? SAIT Recreation has just the ticket

TAIT boasts a wide variety of athletic and recreation activities for students and staff that are also open to the public.

“We hope that there’s something for everyone,” says Amanda Gill, SAIT’s recreation co-ordinator.

“[For example], spikeball If you want to play ice hockey there’s that too, there’s yoga, there’s dance, there’s a wide variety,” Gill said in a recent interview.

SAIT’s facilities include a bowling alley, a salt water pool, an NHL sized arena, a gymnasium and other activity rooms located in the Campus Centre.

SAIT offers many different intramural sports from dodgeball and Ultimate Frisbee to hockey and volleyball.

Registration for indoor winter sports begins Jan. 8, 2018 at 8 a.m. for both hockey and court sports and ends Jan. 16 and 23 at 4 p.m.

Every week Monday to Thursday there are fitness, yoga, wellness and martial arts courses that typically run for 13 weeks of each semester.

Gill encourages students to come out to try activities with drop-in classes or during their wellness weeks.

If they enjoy themselves, they can buy a RecX pass.

A RecX pass can be purchased for for $55 which allows students to attend one class of each type each week.

SAIT offers a few wellness weeks a year which are free activity weeks for students to try out activities and get a break from school and exams.

The Dec. 11-14 wellness week will include a “tin for the bin” option  for food bank donations as drop in fees.

“It’s an opportunity for people to participate if they don’t have a RecX pass and we’ll heavily program yoga that week because it’s exam week,” said Gill.

The first wellness week of the new year will be Jan. 15-19.

Gill is hoping more students will come out to experience what there is to offer and in turn enjoy and continue participating in the programs and events.

To get away from the business of the city, SAIT is also offering an outdoor adventures program. There are two upcoming snowshoeing trips and there already have been two hiking trips.

We hope that there’s something for everyone. – Amanda Gill

For those a little less active, SAIT participates in the E-gaming with semi-competitive tournaments that include opportunities to win prizes.

The tournaments are held in the Gateway in the Campus Centre and projected onto the big screens on stage.

The next tournament is Call of Duty and will happen on Feb. 6, 2018.

Recreation guides with information about each of the activities, fees, and special events are found in the athletic and recreation offices in the Campus Centre.
