The Calgary Farmers’ Market has plans to open a second 50,000-square-foot market in the northwest community of Greenwich by 2021.
Amanda Langbroek, marketing and events specialist for the Calgary Farmers’ Market, said that a second market is both ‘’wanted and needed’’ by Calgarians in the northwest.
The decision to go for a second market was reached after test markets were run over the summer.
Langbroek said in an interview that the initial pursuit of a second market ‘’felt a bit risky’’ because the Calgary Farmers’ Market will be the first farmers’ market in North America to have a second location.
The Calgary Farmers’ Market hosted a series of five pop-up markets near the construction site of the future Greenwich market on Greenbriar Way N.W. over the summer. Their last pop-up market was on Sept. 14.
‘’We’ve been really motivated by seeing how excited people are at the pop-up markets,’’ said Langbroek. ‘’People love these vendors.’’
Langbroek said that the second market will be able to meet the demand there is from the northwest for a closer location.
The second market will be located across the Trans-Canada Highway from Winsport and will be 15 minutes away from downtown Calgary.
The existing location is on Blackfoot Trail, just north of Heritage Drive S.E., and just west of the Deerfoot Meadows shopping area and Ikea.
The new market will be bringing 75 per cent of businesses and vendors now in the existing market.
‘’We gave our vendors the first chance to express if they wanted to be a part of the second market,’’ said Langbroek, as they want to make them a priority in the ‘’current economic times.’’
‘’We’re like a little family,’’ said Langbroek. “It’s great to grow and expand with vendors that people trust.’’
Sascha Kalivoda, a partner of the Lotus Herbal Health outlet at the Calgary Farmers’ Market, said the second market will be ‘’very successful’’ because ‘’there is a big hole in the northwest.”
‘’The market will be very successful and I’m excited for it,’’ said Kalivoda.

The second market will also feature produce customers love, such as Gull Valley Growers’ tomatoes.
For the past 15 years, Dennis Pasenan, a southeast Calgary resident, has been visiting the Calgary Farmers’ Market every Friday for the Gull Valley tomatoes.
‘’I eat one tomato for breakfast every day, whether I need to or not,’’ said Pasenan.
Pasenan said that he will continue to buy his tomatoes at the southeast market because he likes it best.
Langbroek said that although a second market is being opened, the southeast site will “always be renovated to our requirements.’’
The West Calgary Farmers’ Market will be an ‘’iconic moment for Calgary,’’ said Langbroek, because it is designed to be a ‘’beautiful, new, and purpose-built’’ structure inspired by old Toronto and New York markets like the St. Lawrence and Chelsea Market.
